South Carolina Highway 185 is a 26.92 mile state highway that runs from US 178 near Hodges northeast to SC 28 near Homeland Park south of Anderson, going through Due West, home of Erskine College, along the way.

We're all familiar with the softball team's opponent UGA, Georgia's land-grant research university established in 1785, one of the three oldest universities in the U.S. along with UNC and William and Mary. We know that UGA has a good veterinarian school and law school. And we know about Athens and about UGA's football team winning 2 recent national championships to catch up with Clemson with 3 each. Except Dooley decided to claim one for 1942 in the late 80s; maybe Clemson should claim one for 1948. Notable former students and faculty include Herschel Walker, Lewis Grizzard, Jan Kemp, members of the B-52s and R.E.M., AFDawg (his son went to Clemson), and lightbulbbill's son. Prayers for the family of the young lady that was killed near campus.

185 - Artavis Scott Gained 185 Yards to Beat the Chickens in 2014

In 2014, Gamechicken fans were riding high from their five game winning streak against Clemson. They had deluded themselves into thinking their program would be relevant nationally and in the state over a long term. Poor, deluded Chickens never saw reality coming.

Three offensive skill players of note, QB Deshaun Watson, RB Wayne Gallman, and WR Artavis Scott each had big games as Clemson trounced the Chickens 35-17. For the game;
- The 35 points were the most Clemson had scored against S.Car since 2003, when the Good Guys pulled out a squeaker: 63-17.
- The Good Guys compiled a mere 491 yards in total offense – which was also the most Clemson had put up against S.Car since the 2003 63-17 game.

CBProf Jr and I walked out of Death Valley believing that good things seemed to be on the horizon – because each of the three offensive stars were merely freshmen. Looking back now, I know that we actually didn’t dream big enough in anticipating the near future for Clemson football.

Artavis Scott, particularly put on a show against the Chickens that day with 185 yards receiving – including stapling one Gamechicken defender’s hand into the ground!

Actually, Artavis Scott was electric for his Clemson career. He put up some great stats:

2014:
- 76 Receptions for 965 Yards (12.7 Average) and 8 Touchdowns
- 6 Carries for 18 Yards (3.0 Average) and 0 Touchdowns
- 1 Kick Return for 19 Yards (19.0 Average)
- 0 Punt Returns

2015:
- 93 Receptions for 901 Yards (9.7 Average) and 6 Touchdowns
- 6 Carries for 20 Yards (3.3 Average) and 1 Touchdown
- 15 Kick Returns for 371 Yards (24.7 Average)
- 13 Punt Returns for 55 Yards (4.2 Average)

2016:
- 76 Receptions for 614 Yards (8.1 Average) and 5 Touchdowns
- 6 Carries for 11 Yards (1.8 Average) and 0 Touchdowns
- 23 Kick Returns for 535 Yards (23.3 Average)
- 9 Punt Returns for 59 Yards (6.6 Average)

Clemson Career (2014-2016):
- 245 Receptions for 2480 Yards (10.1 Average) and 19 Touchdowns
- 18 Carries for 49 Yards (2.7 Average) and 1 Touchdown
- 39 Kick Returns for 925 Yards (23.7 Average)
- 22 Punt Returns for 114 Yards (5.2 Average)

ClemsonTigers.com adds the following information from their bio on Artavis:
- All-ACC wide receiver each of his three seasons
- Clemson’s career leader with 245 receptions (fifth in ACC history) for 2,458 yards and 19 touchdowns in 1,981 snaps over 43 career games (36 starts)
- Caught a pass in 42 of 43 games and finished with a streak of 38 straight with at least one reception, setting a school-record streak
- Had six games with at least 100 receiving yards
- Fifth in Clemson history with 19 career receiving touchdowns
- Earned invitation to the Senior Bowl.

https://clemsontigers.com/sports/football/roster/artavis-scott/

Of note:
- Artavis Scott’s 245 receptions is still the Clemson record!
- Scott’s Clemson record of 38 consecutive games with a reception was broken in 2018 by Hunter Renfrow. Renfrow finished Clemson with 43 consecutive games with a reception.

After Clemson;

Artavis Scott signed with he Los Angeles Chargers after going undrafted in 2017. Artavis had spent the last two seasons with Clemson as a graduate assistant. Earlier this month (February 2024) he decided to move on from Clemson in pursuit of his next career challenge.

Tough and explosive! A true Clemson legend!

Artavis Scott Clemson highlight video (He had a lot of highlights so the video is 3 minutes – and well worth it):

And, as for the specific play where he stapled the poor little gamechicken’s hand into the Death Valley turf (that’s is worth its own video):

That was the first Clemson Carolina game I was at. Luckily I didn't go in 22 so I have never seen us lose to them in person. Good game it was cold and we won that's as much as I remember.
