Tale of 2 narratives - FL school book ban
Feb 16, 2023, 8:10 PM
|

Compare the two narratives (liberal vs conservative perspectives) regarding the FL ban on non-curriculum books which are not ‘pre-approved’ by DeSantis administration’s school book committee.
Be mindful that DeSantis’ committee is monitoring the non-curriculum books … not the books which are core-curriculum books.
Big wow here … there is a solar system gulf between what liberals and conservatives believe is important.
We report, you decide.

Liberal perspective: Spoiler alert … this is all about concern for the ‘educator.’ Kids? We don’t give a F (literally) about what they see. And, those brats aren’t even members of the FL teachers’ union!
Ron DeSantis ban forces Florida teachers to remove books from classrooms | The Independent
Florida’s public schools non-curriculum guidelines … liberals perspective.
Salient cut-and-paste paragraphs:
That “curriculum transparency” law requires school book selections “to be free of pornography and prohibited materials harmful to minors,” and mandates the “regular removal or discontinuance” of books that do not meet state guidelines.
But critics have argued that the law, coupled with similar actions taken by Mr DeSantis, targets the LGBTQ community, prohibits discussion about Black history and diversity, and is fuelled by Right-wing activists with an anti-LGBTQ agenda.

Conservative perspective: It’s about the kids.

I’ve graduated and have my cookie to prove it.
What are they teaching you in kindergarten?

Just to make sure I understand you correctly

You are good with a "state-approved reading list" and punishing people who have books that aren't on that list?
That the government should have that authority? Let's start there.
Did you know in Duval County, they've banned 176 books--one of them being a Berenstain Bears book?
Do you agree with this:
That school system also warned its educators that they could face felony charges if they fall foul of the law.
You think teachers should face felony charges if they have a book on their shelves that doesn't fall on the approved list?
That's the world you want us to live in?

Yes … and here’s why

Schools are ‘slipping through’ cartoon #### into schools as non-curriculum books.
Most of the non-curriculum books are innocuous … not ####. Some of those books, unfortunately, are essentially pornographic.
Because schools have abused their status as trustworthy institutions for educating our kids, they have forfeited their independence to unilaterally choose which books are available to school kids.
This what happens when trustworthiness is destroyed.
Xxxxxxxxxxx
Would the school meal programs be trustworthy if, for once in every fifty meals, barbiturates were dosed into one lunch?
In this analogy, the school should be disallowed from providing ANY MEAL to ANY KID without first being pre-screened by an outside authority to prove that there are no barbiturates in any meal.

I’m grateful that DeSantis puts the interests and well being of school kids above that of the school employees. The US Department of Education is a travesty and needs to be destroyed and started over from scratch.

You are good with the government creating a list of approved books and charging people with a felony if they have ANY book that isn't on that list on their shelves.
So if an English teacher has the Bible on her shelf (since the Bible is the most referenced work in all of English-speaking lit) and it isn't on the government's list, that teacher goes to prison? That's what you want to happen?
Good to see you saying out loud that you do not support a free society.
Take a look at this list of banned books in Duval County and tell me which ones are pornographic. Are the Berenstain Bears pornographic?
EDIT: Do you support banning guns because a few have been used by a few bad people to harm kids in schools?

What they say:
Feb 17, 2023, 11:14 AM
|
|
"We want to ban anything that isn't pornographic to protect kids!"
What they mean: "By using that scare tactic to open the door to banned books, we can now ban anything that presents any viewpoint that isn't heterosexual, white, and Christian."
Yes, that's what people like RTD actually want.
