As they deal with electricity shortages and ask for 78 thermostats and rolling blackouts.

I was on the coast, we just opened our sliding doors. Never got above 80 there.
I imagine the load is much greater in land because 20 miles east and the temps get into the 100s. This is probably why we never got cut off. My power bills in the summer were around 35 bucks a month.

to come along and just cancel it.
On the other hand, it may be that it will be moot, and gas powered cars will be obsolete by then anyway.

I'm all for getting rid of gas, but all cars?

The only person that might make this feasible is Tesla with their battery tech.
It all boils down to, can you get a super fast charging battery. Its gotta be at least within 5 minutes imo.

Battery tech is holding everything back. The article I linked below claims he is working on a new, more efficient design that will have higher capacity and lower the cost of the car considerably. It certainly will not be good for road trips though. But by 2035 I imagine electric cars will be everywhere.

Lithium, cobalt and manganese for the batteries are recovered and processed with high-energy input. A battery for a Tesla Model 3, for example, pollutes the climate with 11 to 15 tons of CO2. With a battery life of ten years and a mileage of 15,000 kilometres per year, that alone would mean 73 to 98 grams of CO2 per kilometre, according to the findings.
Add to this the CO2 emissions of the electricity and, in reality, the Tesla has emissions between 156 and 181 grams of CO2 per kilometre - significantly more than a comparable diesel Mercedes.
