To date, all the side effects are also covid side effects

Jul 29, 2021, 1:42 PM

There's a very good reason for that. The heart thing? You remember when Ohio State almost cancelled football, and the Big 10, last season? Do you remember WHY they started playing later than everyone, and WHY they almost cancelled the season?

https://wexnermedical.osu.edu/mediaroom/pressreleaselisting/myocarditis-after-covid-study

15% of recovered college athletes has signs of myocarditis after recovering from covid. It is a COMMON adverse effect of covid, FAR more common in a natural covid infection really. But it's the same thing. Blood clots? Same. Much higher risk of them with covid.

When you know how the vaccines are made, and you finally understand you WILL get covid, and it's not going anywhere, the decision is a no brainer. Covid is just nasty. It impacts almost every organ. And you have to understand a vaccine made based on the virus, is going to have some of the same complications. It also may be the reason a booster may never happen. Another dose may make those covid complications more common vaccine complications. Think of the vaccine as a complimentary initial covid illness, safe and free of charge and any major problems. It trains your body to recognize covid, and fight it. THEN when you get it again, you have a milder illness. You can opt for the dangerous road and just get covid, and roll the dice. You will still get it again, and again. It's just like influenza.

Now viral vector vaccines are a little more dangerous, as they use some surrogate virus, or animal, to make antibodies, instead of you making them yourself. On paper, the mRNA vaccines are "safer" as YOU make the antibodies, based on how you respond to the transmission piece of the real virus. You get the vaccine, you ARE getting covid. A 100% identical piece of it anyway, and that's better than getting the whole virus at once.

This was my thinking on it. I could have gotten J&J earlier, but waited because that was a viral vector vaccine. ICU's in Mississippi are full of almost exclusively J&J vaccinated people, among those in there who received a vaccine. The mRNA vaccines are superior because they are honestly MORE NATURAL than almost any other vaccine ever made. And their limitations are also the limitations of the virus as well. Their effect wanes. That's why you get two shots. Antibodies wane in a natural covid infection as well, but the times vary based on the severity of your illness. Children have more side effects because their immune systems are stronger, makes sense.

I too was suspicious of the vaccines, and it was last November when England announced B.117 that I realized it would probably be a good thing to get the mRNA vaccines. Until last November, we were TOLD the virus mutates slowly, VERY slowly, and a good vaccine could stop it cold. November's news blew that out of the water. It's another influenza basically. As such, might as well get the 100% virus mRNA vaccine, because if not, you will eventually end up getting the virus as B.117 or some other mutation.

That was my thinking. And there may well be long term side effects of the vaccine. But I'd wager you would find those also to be long term side effects of covid. Everyone WILL get one or the other. So pick. You can get the spike protein mRNA coursing through your veins and get some initial immunity from the vaccine, or the full virus' mRNA and roll the dice all at once. IN fact, it may be beneficial to get delta after the vaccine. That adds to your arsenal of antibodies, and then you have natural immunity to the original virus, and the latest mutation. I think this is why they have let it go in England, and tried to here anyway. But with so many vaccine holdouts, those vaccinated can get sick (that's fine) and spread it, that's BAD because then hospitals get filled with unvaccinated people.

It's why we can't have nice things.

Several years ago I caught pneumonia in the summer

Jul 29, 2021, 2:18 PM

I was young and fit, and it nearly killed me. Fortunately I got to the doctor in time and started heavy doses of antibiotics. No idea how I picked it up. Not much of a social butterfly and spent most of my time outdoors.

Apparently covid is more contagious than pneumococcal pneumonia, and you can't cure it with horse pill antibiotics. It took me six months to recover.

Hanging back on a vaccine that will prevent something like this does not seem beneficial.

At some point you'll realize it just won't fix itself I reckon but lord only knows how long that may take.

Re: Here’s why I haven’t gotten vaccinated to date

Jul 29, 2021, 3:00 PM

1 - 4 are all valid. Glad so many folks were willing to go to bat for you and the other non-vaxxed and help get lives and the economy moving a little better again.

No. 5 - Fauci and much of the scientific and medical community have been warning about variants from the get go, and not allowing them the space to develop via enough of the population getting vaccines and snuffing those opportunities out. Many chose not to believe this, and we are seeing exactly what we were warned about. Tough thing with variants also is they can easily outpace the levels of protections we produce. Viruses want to live, thrive, and survive, and will find ways to adapt around defenses, given the opportunity. Now that enough Delta cases are out there, there's great opportunity for it to "adapt" into something even worse that today's vaccines may not be near as effective in combating, as Delta is proving more elusive than the prior incarnations.

6. Hard to imagine not needing booster shots in the future for this type of disease. If we can't, or are unwilling, to stay ahead of the curve, we will be caught in it indefinitely and will be something similar to seasonal flu shots.

7. Guidelines suggested restrictions be lifted for the vaxxed, but many un-vaxxed just hopped in and took advantage, probably not wanting to stand out by wearing a mask which could signify that you weren't vaxxed and thus maybe not doing your part, at the time, to stamp it out. As we know, masks aren't perfect and aren't 100% effective, but they do mitigate, and every little bit helps.

On not having infected someone with Covid, knowing this would depend on you having been tested for antibodies or not to see whether you may have had it but were asymptomatic. Asymptomatics don't seem to be as contagious as more symptomatic, but you can still transmit it. Just like now with the Delta variant, a vaxxed person can be a carrier, infect others, and not know it due to lack of symptoms.

This is why I hope the Novavax vaccine gets approved

Jul 29, 2021, 5:29 PM

It addresses basically all your concerns:

1.)It's based on vaccine technology that's well-established (tetanus, Polio, Hepatitis B and Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) all use the same method)

2.) It has fewer reported side-effects than the others (or at least Pfizer/Moderna)

3.) It's around 90% effective.

But I'm not sure why your numbers 4, 5, 6, and 7 points should have any impact on your decision to get a vaccine. Vaccines help you first (and that's been proven true to answer your number 3, which you admit), and also help your neighbor but only in the aggregate (though you also protect because you don't shed as much virus even if you get it when vaccinated, so that directly helps your neighbor).

There is very little argument for not getting vaccinated, but if you do see one, the Novavax vaccine should alleviate your worries (assuming they approve it for use here and we don't just donate them all overseas).
