I don’t consider Goodwin an inside hire

Certainly not the same as most of the staff that is considered “home grown”. He did not play football at Clemson. He coached in he pros and other places and I don’t think he has spent the majority of his career at Clemson. I think he was brought in to replace Venables when the inevitable happened. But because he was already on staff it fits the narrative that many want to use to criticize Dabo.

Ok. I stand corrected. Wasn’t sure if the number of years at each place, but knew he hadn’t been at Clemson his whole career. With 8 years at Clemson and 5 years elsewhere and not having played ball at Clemson, I still don’t see him having the same Clemson roots as the others.

interest of general discussion.
Dabo built the foundation of the program on Family, Clemson Family & Culture - some of those family members might be adopted, but still loved as much as any and given the opportunity to grow, thrive, fulfill personal & career goals, while in the best interest of Clemson as well.
People will attack any & all areas they view a possible detriment to the program, perceived or other, and based mostly on their personal desires & expectations.
I'm here for the ride; it's been a great one to date.

My two question with Goodwin -- 1) did he at any age ever put on a uniform and play the game? And, 2) did he ever coach players in the NFL or college ball as a position coach, or was Wes purely a video analyst?

how can you not see that?
Top 5 programs don’t hire coaches that need to go thru a growth curve.
He is not ready for that position.

I didn’t say he isn’t under qualified. It is obvious he wasn’t a proven commodity at the time of his promotion. I just don’t consider him “home-grown”. Dabo was under qualified when he was promoted to HC. We saw that too.

That is true regarding Dabo. But he is a natural born leader. And yes he was still a big gamble.
The D doesn’t play with the same intensity that it should. I think a lot of that comes from the DC.

I will always “fluff things up”. It is my nature as a positive person. None of us know if these hires are BS or not. We do know they were unproven and risky. Time will tell if the were good hires or not. I, personally think it is still a little early to make a final judgement. I guess part of that comes down to how highly you value instant gratification verses long term results.

You can do whatever you want. But it’s annoying as ####. Those hires have proven through 9 games to be god awful. Even our defense ain’t the same. I believe what my eyes see.

Being a DC is much more than calling plays

He has to a leader of that side of the ball and be able to inspire his players.
I don’t see any of that. It’s not his fault. I don’t know if those players fully respect him.
He has no track record of doing that job at any level.

No disagreement with any of that. He was definitely unproven at the time if his promotion. I just wondered if other long time Clemson fans considered him a home grown coach in the same way we do Streeter, CJ, Grissom, Richardson, Elliott, and Jeff Scott (I know those last 2 are gone but are still from similar backgrounds). I guess not playing at Clemson is the biggest difference.

outside when compared to those guys. I think Dabo goes off on this tangent that he has to prove everyone wrong by doing it his unconventional way. I think he takes great joy when he is able to do that.

Chad Morris was a coach we took a chance on that didn't have much college under his belt. Mostly success as High School Coach.

Same with Conn.
Dabo said that he didn’t even consider anyone else. No other interviews. No calls to other coaches to gauge interest.

I understand the definition of an inside hire. I just don’t consider his as “home grown” as the others. Probably because he didn’t play at Clemson.

I am hoping the defense puts together 4 quarters that match the level of talent. Haven’t seen it yet. Now we have to face Cunningham who scares me to death. I hope I’m wrong but I have dreaded this game all week.

I thought Goodwin would be a great hire due to his football IQ but severely underestimated what BVs intensity brought to it. I don’t see fire anymore, we use to put fear into other teams and showed up against bigger teams with smiles because we knew they were about to be surprised. Goodwin could be a great analyst but we need FIRE back

BV’s fire and intensity was one of the things I loved most about him. Expected that it was going to be pretty tough for just about anyone to duplicate that but I agree I think we lost more of that than I would have liked to. Really hoped Eason would pick up the slack in that regard.

It doesn’t matter whether he’s an inside hire or outside hire.
The only thing that matters is is will he be a great defensive coordinator. I think the jury is out.

Yea. That is my position at this point too. Obviously there are some here that are ready to run the guy off after 9 games. I wasn’t raised to expect instant gratification.

I would have loved a seamless transition but I think Goodwin is the type of guy that will just keep getting better. I think Streeter is much more of a work in progress and needed more time at a lower program to develop.
