Have we ever played a team from the Pac 12?

Colorado comes to mind but they were Big 12 then (‘05 Champ Sports Bowl). Am I missing a team?

I was as well. Crappy weather. Cal WR Sean Dawkins dominated us. Chester Mcglockton got kicked out early. I always looked at that game as the turning point of when the fan base fully turned against Hatfield and started a crappy era of Clemson football that didn’t end until Bowden came.

I know that at the end with TB, it wasn't a good ending for a HC, but what an awful lot of our younger fan base really don't understand, T Bowden is the HC that started the return of Clemson FB back from the Danny Ford days, or IMHO he did!!! Before Tommy, we didn't expect to beat anybody in the ACC, every game was coin flip, honestly!!!

So funny you bring this up. I was thinking about this the other day. Tommy Bowden did allot to turn this program around including recommending Dabo. He could not take it to the next level that we knew we were capable of and for this many of us wanted him gone 2 years before it happened. In retrospect, it was good TDP waited and we ended up with the scenario we have.

I cant speak from 1st hand experience before West, but I remember watching from the hill as my classmates tore down the goal posts after a 3-8 Clemson team (maybe, did we have 3 wins!?!?) beat the winless Gamecocks

Yes, I love what Bowden did at and for Clemson in terms of culture, expectations, facilities

I try my very best to not take for granted how special this ride is Clemson fans are on right now.

Looked it up. Brentson Buckner.

Re: Have we ever played a team from the Pac 12?

Oct 31, 2022, 10:07 PM

I lived in the Bay Area for 15 months back in ‘86-‘87, because my wife is from there (Fremont, the only sane city in the Bay Area.)

Back then I kept reading in the Mercury News about potential discipline of the Stanford marching band because some members formed into the beginning letters of an obscenity while performing. I never understood that. How many members does it take to form “F-U-“ or whatever the word was? It sounds like it included more than a few participants. And how could they have done that instead of forming whatever they were supposed to be forming?

Then it also was reported that some members urinated on the field—their own field—also while performing.

Eventually some suspensions were handed down, but I never could grasp how lax leadership had to be in order for those immature adults to get away with that. In the South, marching bands have the reputation for being more disciplined than the athletes. Band directors wouldn’t even tolerate that behavior in Middle School down South.

That December I attended the Shrine Bowl, where the newly restored SMB performed at halftime. I quickly had my confusion erased. Fewer than 50% of the musicians actually faced the director. Uniforms were sloppy. There was no coordinated footwork or movement at all, so it’s no wonder members could arrange their own letters—as well as get caught doing it. They showed up, got in position, played how they wanted and left. I’ve never been so unimpressed with ’smart people’ in my life.

Ever since then My disrespect for that place is always lurking in the back of my mind.

I attended two games when we played PAC 10 teams..........

Nov 1, 2022, 8:23 AM

We were up 27-0 on Stanford and I thought we would destroy them. I think they started their backup qb but they had a really good running back named Brad Muster who would play for the Chicago Bears. We ended up hanging on as they came back in the second half 27-21.

The Citrus Bowl vs Cal was one of the low points of Clemson football. We had an extremely talented defense that was dominant. But we weren't good against the pass as Georgia exposed early in the year. Cal did what they wanted to that game. And offensively we were never good with Dechane Cameron at qb.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A few things I remember about that game...

Nov 1, 2022, 10:37 AM

It was a cloudy somewhat rainy afternoon in Orlando.

The team came-out and warned-up in orange jerseys before changing into the purple jerseys.

The Clemson offense played terrible. They could not sustaining drives and keep the defense off the field, especially in the first half.

DeChane Cameron threw three interceptions.

The 72-yard punt return for a TD just before the end of the first quarter gave Cal a 17 - 0 lead.

The game was not a sell out largely because of the opponent. I seem to recall Cal brought less than 5,000 fans. There were tons of tickets for sale outside the stadium prior to kickoff.
