going to cigar.com and getting one of their sampler packs. Get one with a variety of cigar types (different sizes, wrappers, and country of origin). Then you'll find what you like. Ask them for recommendations if you aren't sure, they are happy to help.
You can get a solid cigar in the $8-$12 range. I wouldn't spend more than $15-$20 on a cigar at this point, because you won't appreciate the nuances. You can obviously spend way more than this.
Do you have a humidor? If not, you should buy a small one so that you'll have a place to properly store your cigars when they arrive. Otherwise, they will dry out and they will be ruined. You can get a decent humidor on Amazon for $40-$50. If you aren't ready to spend that much, you can use a Tupperware container.
Regardless of your humidor, you'll need something to provide the humidity source. A company called Boveda makes humidor packs to maintain the proper level of humidity (which is about 70%). They have a starter kit for cigar humidors, also available on Amazon.
You'll need to get a good cigar cutter too. Please don't use a knife or scissors.

Tupperware with Boveda packs are a good choice!
Most cigars smell great but the guy in the cigar shop that’s picking them up to get a sniff and thinking that’s going to tell them anything is a newbie. Does not take a real long time to figure out who the best cigar makers are. I seem to like cigars made in the Dominican and for what reason I have no idea.
When buying out of the country if the price seems to good to be true then be rest assured it is. There are plenty of places that can educate you on spotting fakes. Cohiba’s are probably the worst. The band’s have been altered and most can’t tell the difference. Easy money for those selling to tourist.

I buy mine at a local cigar store to encourage them - shop local. I have decided my favorite size is a Churchill and I prefer a mild cigar.
No need to spend a fortune. I have smoked genuine Cuban Cohibas and I am not a fan. My go to smokes are from Drew Estates.

cigarsinternational.com or thompsoncigar.com. Oliva V is my go to smoke, but I don't buy many labels. Watch both of those sites for sales on seconds that didn't quite pass QC so they just peel the label off and sell them in volume at a discount. My humidor is about 75% Oliva seconds and 25% labels, I have never smoked the label and as long as it tastes the same and doesn't fall apart, I will just keep my $2/stick.

My recommendation: don’t buy cigars online.
Go to a good local store and ask them for recommendations. Buy from them, not a mega corporation on the internet.

Yeah. Personally, I would rather give my money to a business owning neighbor trying to do things like save for his kids college than help a gazillionaire buy another McMansion vacation house.
I would also rather talk to a person about cigar recommendations while roaming the humidor than just “add to cart”.
That’s just me I guess.

Many people who own cigar websites are also honest people trying to send their kids to college.

I guess I’ve been spoiled by having a great (IMO) shop 4 blocks from my house. They could have a bigger selection, but they always have something that I will like (I’m not picky). I suppose if they weren’t there I may have an entirely different opinion.
I can’t blame anyone for trying to save money. I also hate watching so many friends lose their businesses.

store, they have a walk in humidor with all the popular brands, macanudo, fuentes, punch, ...i like a punch...hell,i like em all... just done smoke more than one or two a month and puff, dont drag like a cigarette...

find a local place that can help you find what you like. Once you find what you like you can explore the online world. You can find deals for "bundles" of cigars online but alot of times they give you things they have excess amounts of which usually isn't good. If you have a local shop that is where I would start.

Cubanlous.com. They’re legit and 100% authentic. I really only smoke Cubans these days. I’d go for Cohiba, Romeo Y Juliet, or Monte Cristo.

(i.e., Delta 8 shops) have inexpensive off-brand cigars in their humidors and these are just fine. Try the different wrappers and lengths and stuff, but the easiest is to just start with your basic Corona-sized cigar and don't spend much. Once you have that down, try your various sizes, tobacco types, etc.
Don't spend a lot and don't go for Delta 8 store specials like the Nub cigars. If you're going name brand, buy Partagas, CAO, Punch, Arturo Fuente, etc.

I had a Romeo and Julieta 1875 with my boyfriend last night. It paired well with a nice single malt scotch. It's medium bodied and kind of oakie. I just let him pick em for me, so I'm not an expert, lol!

El Rey De Mundo has a 25 pack on JRCigars that’s my daily go to cigar. Most AlecBradley’s are good. Any AJ Fernandez made smokes are very good imo. If you want a pricey but great smoke then get a Padron. I have smoked cigars for years and it’s easily the best I have ever had. Get on JR’s create an account. I do the classic auctions and usually get some great deals. Samplers are good but really depends on how much you are willing to pay for them. Lot of low end cigars out there that have a bad draw or are bitter imo. Personally like a V cutter but get all three style cuts to find your preference. Will need a good torch lighter and somewhere to store them. I made a cool idor for mine. Basically a cooler with some cedar, hydrometer and plenty of Boveda packs. Enjoy! Don’t inhale .

Look for "The General" cigar Dave on Apple podcast. He is probably the most knowledgeable person around concerning cigars. He can also recommend the proper libation for each particular stogie!

Yea most Oliva’s are good sticks! The Padron I had mentioned is definitely a special occasion cigar. Little to pricey to be an everyday for me at least.

As Judge mentioned, Cigar.com is a good site, as well as the sister sites CigarsInternational.com and CigarBid.com (the latter is an auction site, and you can score some sweet deals.) Samplers are definitely the way to go when starting out. You can get 5 to 10 packs or even get 20-30 piece samplers.
I would suggest spending some time on Cigars International's site. You can browse by whatever means you choose, read staff and customer reviews, etc. I do think if you have a good local store, it's better than buying online, but of course it depends where you live. Taxes on tobacco in MN are ridiculous, so I'm forced to buy online.
There are a ton of expensive cigars out there. You don't need to buy them to find a good smoke. Padron 1926 and 1964 are phenomenal, and as expensive as they come. If you have the cheddar to afford it, by all means, enjoy them. There are, however, amazing $3 cigars out there as well. You just have to find them.
Take notes on what you smoke. Find out where each is from. You will probably find you prefer a certain country's tobacco. You may prefer a certain wrapper. Try multiple vitolas from the same brand; you may find you like one and not another. Develop a routine for smoking; drink the same drink, munch on the same snack. It may be boring, but other tastes can affect your experience. You want the cigar to be the focus.
Get a good cutter (figure out which cut you prefer: V-cut, guillotine, or punch,) a good lighter (you'll want something wind-resistant,) and a draw fixer. Every so often, you're going to get a plugged cigar. You won't be able to draw much smoke from it, and it will go out easily. Two I've seen is the Draw Poker, and PerfecDraw. It's a sharp, barbed poking tool to drill a passage through the cigar so you're not sucking away at it like a thick milkshake. Highly recommended.
Stay away from seconds. Just trust me on this.

I won some Arco Miami’s on an auction and every other one has drawing issues which I had seen mentioned in the reviews. The toothpick treatment can sometimes fix the issue but if it does not it’s put down. Takes the enjoyment out of it to fight to keep one lit.

Looks like JK gave you some good takes on it, but here's my 2 cents worth.
-Find a good local shop and get to know the owner via frequent visits, even if you only get 1 or 2 to try.
-Decide what flavor level you're most comfortable with; mild to robust. Also, what length and girth works best for you. Quick smoke or a good, 1 hour cigar? Avoid flavored cigars.
-Cutters are good, but so is a punch (my preferred method)
-Get a torch style lighter, so you can light it in front of you and see a good even dispersion of burn on the tip.
-Online, I actually like JR Cigars, they carry most of the brands, have good specials and their own branded cigars ain't bad in a pinch.
Good luck and please, recreate the Joe Burrow picture after every Clemson victory, like I did in Orlando last year.

I usually get mine off of Famous Smoke Shop. There's some good deals to be found there. I like trying different ones out. Mild medium or full try them all Arturo Fuentes are good quality, Acid, and Rocky Patel also are typically good. Depends on your taste though. I have found over time that you have to spend $8-15 each to get a "good" cigar. Anything less and the wrapper is junk or it burns terrible or it just isn't flavorful. Rocky Patel/ Drew Estate makes a Java line that is infused with coffee, latte, mint etc ..that's good. Java Red I love. But it's in the sweeter mild side.
