My sister in law was killed by a drunk driver, so it’s a sore spot for me. If you blow over the the limit, then you should be punished severely.

The limit was once .12, then .1, now .08 in most places.
Throw in dope and cell phones these days as it aint all alcohol.
Hitting the road is a gamble.

Sorry for your loss. It seems like 2 or 3 times a month it happens in Upstate SC.

I got a DUI in Columbia in 1994 at 25 years old.
That was it for me. It subsequently ruined a great relationship , cost me a good job and was the initiating event for me to face the fact that I was an alcoholic.
I got help. Got sober. Got on with my life.

I drink only socially today . When I do I either ride with a DD or I walk. Simple process.

I have driven after drinking and should not have. However, the one time the police arrested me for DWI (Illinois for driving while intoxicated), they wouldn't believe I had only had one beer (which was true). The county wanted to continue it's lead for the most DWI arrests in the state. I submitted to a blood test and they still wouldn't drop the charges after they got the results. Anyway, when I got to court, I was so far under the limit the Judge threw it out and the Deputy had nothing to say other than I was cooperative.

Does this Illinois county have a TNET handle?

It was Grundy County and they were battling McLean County in DWI arrests.

The charge is not driving after too much alcohol, but driving while impaired from anything, including prescription meds.
Additional laws are most places such as blowing under .08, or refusing to be tested.

those who drive under the influence of cell phones should face the same criminal charges as those who drive under the influence of booze/drugs/meds.

So I'm in no position to judge young Schieffelin. I wasn't possessed of a fully-developed frontal lobe until I was about 30, and wake up every day amazed I survived all the horrific decisions I made.

I have never drank a drop of alcohol in my life and did regularly perform Designated driver duties for friends back in the 90’s.

In my late 20's had a car with blue lights and siren. By 30 they realized I could not be trusted with that.
Capturing drunk drivers was easy, convicting them took experience.
Those who could afford a high dollar attorney never went to trial, they just pled to "reckless".
District Judges are elected. They receive most of their campaign funds from other lawyers while on the golf course.

It is more difficult to get "off" these days. Lots of that is due to MADD.

Drinking beer on the porch on this lovely evening brought a tale to my brain.

One night on Sugar Creek Road in Charlotte stopped a new blue Cadillac convertible.
The driver told me to stop what I was doing before I got into trouble. He asked if I knew Chief Killman, said I should call him.

I told him I did know the Chief, but not well enough to wake him up to report you are driving drunk.
I towed his Caddy.

I’ve always had a plan if I were going to be drinking…arrange a dd or just crash where I was. These days with how easy it is to get an uber…there’s really no excuse…not worth the chance.

Yes … once.

Diamond resort (Maui) was making margaritas with real squeezed limes. I drove home … talked constantly so as to NOT get sleepy … made it. I then telephoned the Diamond Resort and reported my safe return home.
