Gruden question
Oct 12, 2021, 11:12 AM
|
|
Is it possible to think some of the things that Gruden said are bad and that he should probably be fired, but, in the grand scheme of things, the majority of folks that are truly upset and bothered by all of his emails are upset because they are conditioned to be upset over controversial cancel culture related happenings? I feel like media, especially sports media, is just going through the motions because they feel like they HAVE to go through them. I know some at ESPN (Bomani, Stephan A) and the Athletic (Jamele) are eating this up... but does the casual sports viewer doesn't actually care?
Maybe that is my WASPY persona shining through because ive never truly been discriminated against. I have a gay friend (no, not you FBCoachSC®) and I have wanted to ask him his true thoughts on it all, but I don't want to offend him by posing this question to him. Maybe in the back of my head I am worried that it would come across as an ignorant question? did I just answer my own question?

I’m curious to hear why you think he should be fired.
Not arguing- just asking what he did to cross the line where you think he should lose his job in your eyes?

I have a friend (a Clemson classmate)...

who found out a week ago that he would be losing his job in the public sector because someone uncovered a Facebook post he made seven years ago where he referred to the people in Ferguson, Missouri who were using the Michael Brown death as a excuse to loot and destroy property as "hood rats".

but he works in an "at will employment" state and his contract contains a morality/ethics and termination for cause provision.
He's probably going to get a nice severance package but he won't be reinstated. Fortunately, he has been with them long enough to retire and collect his full benefits.

You're obviously referring to cancel culture

I do think cancel culture has gotten a little too powerful, and while I don't think people should lose their jobs over a slip of the tongue or a single mistake, but it doesn't look good when it's been years.
People love to bash cancel culture, and it deserves a little bashing, but at the same time, look at what it has done. It's no longer acceptable to bash people that are different simply because they're different. Is that a bad thing? It used to be acceptable to hang black people in the town square without a trial, but society advanced past that. Nobody, perhaps except for the Klan members that still meet today on the dark web and hidden in basements because they're scared to do it in the open, thinks that was a bad societal change. In Germany, blonde, blue-eyed kids used to be encouraged to abuse Jewish kids. That progressed to mass murder and violent border expansion, and a world war and tens of millions of troops put a stop to it. It's no longer acceptable to do that because society evolved past it. Nobody but Neo-Nazis thinks that's bad. You get the point.
Cancel culture has made it to where you can't discriminate against LGBTQ, black people, Asian people, or anyone else without fear of reprisal. Is that a bad societal change? In some cases, where the punishment doesn't fit the crime, but Jon Gruden is clearly a deeply bigoted individual who was in a position to lead a team followed by millions, and I don't mind him being canceled for that.

I haven't seen the actual emails in full context. They may be terrible, but I've just read things people have said about the emails.

IMO Cancel Culture is inherently a flawed concept

… for those in entertainment, media, sports and politics. Success in these endeavors is defined by obtaining the attention and interests of masses of people. When things go bad, mass criticism is a natural outcome. This criticism leads to lost popularity and a lower likelihood of future success. Removal from their existing public role also seems to be an inevitable outcome. The game is won or lost in the public arena.

TheProdigal to come in on one of these threads and say that he doesnt know who this "Gruden" is and he cannot make an informed statement because he thinks said "Gruden" guy coached a team that has Satanic people in the crowd that talk backwards to get their message out to the world.

But if it compromises his ability to effectively lead the team, then it seems like that would make the firing obvious.

The leftist culture is destroying the country.
Can this get me fired? White people have straight hair, awful looking large hooked noses, women with huge wide lipid-filled butts, and chicken lips.
