Got a call last night from a member of the Board of Trustees

Sep 7, 2022, 7:20 AM

He said the BOT was concerned about something and wanted some advice. I agreed to listen and see if I could help.

The BOT has recognized a trend of increasing costs of running the Athletic Dept. Things are OK for the moment, but they see inflation as potentially driving up operating costs to an unsustainable level - and at a time when donors are beginning to feel some conflict in their habits of giving due to presure on their own income.

He pointed to the new video board as one shockingly high expenditure, in addition to Dabo's salary contract and all the coaches involved with the athletic programs. The funding of an NIL operation - including a special building and the financial advisors connected to it - was particularly alarming as there seems to be no end in sight for a leveling off of the need for cash in order to compete.

He further said that they were anticipating the possible move to another conference, which might add significantly to travel costs for players, coaches and the band - not to mention the cost of diesel fuel and depreciation to run the equipment busses from Clemson to maybe even the west coast for games. In addition, joining another conference would require forfeiting the paltry $40 million we receive from the ACC TV rights and require us to come out-of-pocket even more to even be able to show up at games.

Left unresolved, these problems extended into the future will result in the potential downfall of Clemson University..... complete insolvency and a declaration of bankruptcy.

So, with those terrible circumstances as a backdrop and recognizing their fiduciary responsibility to the university, its students, employees, faculty and to the State of South Carolina, their concern is whether they can save enough money within the department to survive.

An idea surfaced that seemed to be the only way to negitiate these treacherous conditions: They're considering combining all sports under one coach, doing away with all scholarships and the NIL foundation, changing the dietary options to be outsourced to Chick-Fil-A, athletes will hitch hike to games and back and tickets for home games will be doubled. They are saddened to let Dabo go, but recognize that there are times when the greater need must be accepted.

Of course, managing this revolutionary change will be a challenge and will require a special sort of talent - one who will not only run the athletic department and all the associated sports teams, but the university itself. Yes, he will be named President, Dean and Coach of Clemson University and there is only one person they are considering to be qualified for such an incredibly difficult challenge......... CADE KLUBNIK!

I told him I'd check with T-Net and let him know if they should proceed.

While your attempt at humor is not very funny, to me, it should be noticed that the cost of staying at the top is increasing every year.
To remain at the top in college sports will require more money. And that is a fact. Do your part IF you really care about Clemson University.

Who, me? I've been laughing ever since reading all of the posts that think Cade is the second coming and our last chance to save the world.

I agree that he's a tremendous talent and deserves playing time, but I do think the expectations based on one drive is a bit over the top. I also think he's shown that he has potential to be a better choice for our system than what DJ has demonstrated with the exception of his freshman year.

I think Dabo undeerstands what he's got and he doesn't want to upset the apple cart of team morale and destroy the sense of family that has been cultivated at Clemson. It's who we are. He has an opportunity to make the change gradually and he will.

But so many are foaming at the mouth to throw DJ to the lions, it's comical. It would be interesting to select a coach of the week from T-Net and let them devise the game plan and run the show.

Maybe when AI gets a little more advanced we can have a showdown game of fans against the coaches with a running scoreboard with results on T-Net. Now that would be funny!

Nope - I was not referring to you. I get it. You made a light, sarcastic post, made a good, relevant point. Some people didn't understand that, or didn't like it, and instead got all grumpy about it.

They will just raise tuition and raise ticket prices. Also, they will get more money in a new conference and that should negate fuel costs, at least for football.

They might want to rethink outsourcing to Chick-Fil=A. That place ain't cheap. My combo with supersized Waffle Fries and milkshake was almost 15 bucks yesterday. Athletes picking from the value menu at Taco Bell would be more economical.

This sounds like the same Board of Trustees guy who was

meeting with Charley Pell for drinks in the Clemson House bar, behind Red Parker's back. If so, he Shirley is into JoeMentia by now, and should not be listened to, anyway, anyhow. Just get him a bright colored ball to play with, or a nuclear bomb, and he will be happy.
