on Saturday. He's spent 4 years with us, and is a CU grad. Seems fair enough to me.

He deserves to be honored. I hope he reconsiders and allows us to show our appreciation for his commitment to excellence and his dedication to our university, to his studies, and to his character. He has been a great contributor to this team.

Agreed, it's probably best for all parties. We're deep enough at DT to absorb the loss, and it frees up an additional scholarship for recruiting.
I do wonder if this was a decision he made with intentions to enter the draft, or move on and begin his career in another field? He's a very good player, but is he an NFL DT? I'm asking honestly as I am far from capable of evaluating talent especially at the DL.

"Watson feels like it is time to take his game to the next level, but will have to have back surgery after the season is over."
Seems to suggest that he has hopes of playing on Sundays.

there's really no shame in being a backup DT at CU. I'd love to see our 2nd-string guys drafted.. speaks volumes about the program being built here.

JMO, but I think it would be better for our team if he stayed and played another year as a Tiger. He is a very good player, IMO, and I think one of the strongest on the team. That may, or may not, be the best decision for him, though.

I understand his age issue. I also understand the baggage a health question can cause, too. I hope his surgery is successful, and he makes it. He is very strong and a quality guy. I wish him the best.

Um, the next level as in NFL? Ok. I mean the guy's definitely a solid player, but is he even in the draft conversation? Just on my first search, he doesn't come up in the top 65 DTs on the CBS 2014 draft rankings. I understand that he's 24 and ready to move on, but as a junior with no significant draft stock that's going to have surgery at the end of the year (a big minus in the eyes of NFL scouts) why would you not want to come back and try to improve your stock next season?

He has certainly put in his time here at Clemson. 4 years with a degree in addition to prep school. Represented Clemson with class.
I wish him well going forward.
Go Tigers!

Wait a minute...

He's currently at the bottom of the 3 deep, projected 3 months ago as a 4th to 5th round draft pick, and he thinks it's time to leave? Seriously? He seems like the guy who could most benefit from another solid season, hopefully as a 2014 starter. Going early could cost Watson $millions... and if he's not a starter by next season, the NFL ain't looking too promising for him anyway.

The need for back surgery explains his lack of production
Nov 20, 2013, 8:55 PM
|

His snaps have decreased steadily and he has certainly been the least productive DT that plays. With all the other DTs improving and back next year, I think he saw the writing on the wall. I doubt he gets drafted, but good luck to him trying to make the team as a free agent.

Dabo offered to let him run down the hill as a senior since he will have his degree.
He declined the offer because he is not a senior. So much respect for that, even though I would have been perfectly fine with him doing so!!
Wish you the best of luck in trying to turn pro and hope you get that opportunity. And best of luck in whatever life has for you!! Once a Tiger, always a Tiger!

He'll Do Great!

People forget to consider that he is a high character guy and interviews really well. This alone will give him a great shot at making an NFL team. At 24 and with health issues, he realistically has 3-5 years in the league making anywhere from $300,000 to 1.5 million per year depending on his health and ability to progress.
Let says he does well gets a $800,000/year but only plays three years. Most doctors and lawyers don't make half that. Every year is precious in the NFL. It's a good business decision and best of all, when he moves on from football, he has a degree from Clemson University. Life goes on but his opportunities will be there.
