Golf

May 7, 2019, 3:51 PM

It's been a number of years now since I made my last slice or hook, and flubbed that 11 inch putt. I could talk a good game but all that talk could only get me down to a 10 handicap. However, I had lots of fun and explored lots of places not defined as fairway. I've had balls land in palm and palmetto trees and even had one slither down a gopher hole. I've knocked the bark off of more trees than Carter has Little Liver Pills.

Enough about my game so let me tell you about the time I played with an unknown stranger at the golf course at EdisTo Beach. I was alone and the starter asked if would mind playing with another gentleman who was alone. I agreed and off we went to No. 1 tee. I asked him if he would like to join me in my cart and he said "no", that he liked to ride alone. I asked my new-found friend what was his handicap. He didn't respond with a number but said he had never shot above 72 in his life.

That response had me shivering in my boots. That made my 10 handicap feel like I was on another planet. But there was a redeeming feeling. I'm going to watch this guy and maybe I can get some free lessons. We flipped our tees to see who "wood" tee off first and I had the honor. With a golfer of his skills, I figured he was going to get a lot of laughs when he saw old Joe21 in action. Lucky me, I hit one straight down the middle, my ball coming to rest about 200 - 225 yards away. My friend approaches the tee box and gets set to drive. I fully expect his drive to pass mine by 100 yards or more. Well, he almost misses the ball and it rolls forward about 50 yards. His second shot did not reach my ball.

I began to wonder if his game has suddenly gone to pot. Rather than give you a boring play by play account, let me attempt to give you a quick overview of his game. I thought my game was bad but on that day I found someone I could finally beat. I don't remember the hole where it happened, but in the \middle of the fairway, he picked up his ball, said that was stroke number 72 and he was heading to the clubhouse. Before he left, I asked him if he had ever played the last holes on the back nine. He was quite honest and told he had played them only when he was allowed to tee off on the back nine.
