FSU Talent Gap

Oct 25, 2013, 10:06 AM

It's been nearly a week and I keep seeing posts and now a two part story on Tigernet about the talent gap with FSU.

I just don't get how talent was that great of a factor last week. Do more talented tight ends never fumble? Do more talented QBs never make mental mistakes? Do more talented defensive backs never give up big plays? Do more talented players veto the call from the sideline and decide to run the ball when the matchup is favorable (as was the case when we had the ball twice at midfield down 10 points)?

The outcome last week was decided by 4 turnovers, a couple busted plays in the secondary, and a lack of commitment to the running game when FSU had its nickel package on the field after we got the ball twice at the 50 down 17-7.

I don't care if you have Alabama's talent, the screw ups last week would result in a similar outcome.

Does FSU have more talented players? Sure. But that didn't prevent us from beating them 5 straight times in Clemson as well as the 2006 game in Tallahassee.

Our recruiting can get better but FSU has always been a top 5 team based on the talent they recruit. That won't change anytime soon, but I'm tired of this excuse.

We handed them the game on a silver platter and I don't care if you're Alabama, Oregon, or whoever else. If you make as many mistakes as we did you will lose by a lot.

That's all I have. Now time to eliminate the stupid mistakes and beat the Terps. GO TIGERS!

Are we playing Maryland tomorrow or is FSU granting us a rematch? Geez, I hope our players aren't looking in the rear view mirror the way a lot of our fans are or we will lose out and end up in the lowest bowl the ACC has a tie in with.

The reason I posted this is because there is a story on Tigernet about the "talent gap." Given Maryland's injury situation I think we could go up there tomorrow with nothing but FSU on our mind and win convincingly.

So basically, your'e saying FOWCUS?

I agree. It's imperative that we fans focus on the Maryland game.

Oh wait. It doesn't make any difference. See last week.

and ache after such losses. Most things are in jest and akin to punching through the sheet rock or whatever. Personal attacks though should be off limits but this is how we try to heal. Just my perspective...

Maybe I just missed them but...

Oct 25, 2013, 11:19 AM

I don't remember seeing any post about how much more talented they are than us last week.

I read a bunch of info.....

my friends laughed at a blow-out possibility prediction I gave them.

Well said IBeWriteGood®... ppl on here act like we as fans can dictate an outcome and somehow make clem plyrs focus on Maryland, we can't so hopefully they go up there and mash the twerps

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This FSU team is more talented than those previous teams

Oct 25, 2013, 11:33 AM

that we beat and there's one huge reason for it. Jameis Winston. Let's face it, FSU had pretty crappy QB play for much of the last decade or so. Their last two have been pretty good and their teams have improved because of it, but Winston is on an entirely different level.

This is also the best OL i can remember FSU having in quite some time.

Also, if you couldn't see the talent gap in the secondary i don't know to tell ya. It's not just mental mistakes when it happens multiple times every game. Our secondary gives up big plays and struggles to tackle. They aren't big and physical. Those are just facts. FSU's secondary is pretty much the opposite of all of that. Big, strong, fast athletes that can be physical, jam at the line, tackle (and force 2 fumbles), and still stay with WRs down the field.

You're exactly right but let's not forget their WRs.

Who looked like men among boys against our CBs. And we thought we had that!

This is what I saw:

Oct 25, 2013, 12:04 PM

-- Week-long hype had me exhausted- had wondered how the players would not be as well. Was not convinced they were even before the game.

-- FSU seemed quite rested, eager, and singularly focused- playing for the conf title in short.

-- FSU got off to a GREAT start- like we did against scar (63-17) and fed off our bleeding wounds, gaining confidence against matching up...pretty much all positions.

-- For whatever reason, we get a stinger on the chin we believe we are beat or become hesitant.

-- Uncle Mo is as much a Heisman candidate as any. Sat alone can show you that (UCF v LUISVILLE, etc.)

-- Gap in talent was, without a doubt, NOT a 45-point difference. Playing safe though can quickly get it there. FSU played the game of the year, if not this decade so far- ask them.

Playing not to lose or not to be blown out is a guaranteed way to lose or get blown out, especially against a top 5 team that has also been on the very same drought we've been on. FSU has been on top and are hungry just as we are. Jimbo had his team dead on for Sat. Personally I call that experience which will come to us.

My novice and unqualified concerns:

1) Weak chin. We still cannot respond to a stinger as a motivational tool. I keep going back to a player quote from the Danny era where players joked "...losing was not an option because we knew what Danny had in store for us on Monday." I don't think they were joking. I think Danny is responsible for the upper decks just for the extra steps to be counted on those Mondays. Ex players of that era speak up- Dabo in a sense is still a freshman coach.

2) Conceding inferiority. Soft, zone coverage to me is a glaring admission of being inferior. That is Uncle Mo's best friend. Don't get me started on zone coverage.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Only thing I 100% agree with (and it's SPOT on)

Oct 25, 2013, 12:22 PM

Is the soft zone underneath. My God, after a quarter of 75% 3rd down conversion rates and no pass rush, we gave them the 5 to 8 yard pitch and catch every play.

I am no DC Venebles but your gameplan and lack of adjustments just stunk. They just got out-stunk my CM.

That one thing you mention has SO many subsets of

Oct 25, 2013, 12:31 PM

consequences. (Oh quick Q: What was our coverage against that NY team?)

How many 110 percents of Vic can we reasonably expect when he arrives only to know and see the ball is long gone? How inaccurate do we expect a Heisman QB to be? How intuitive do we expect any back to be when they know what lane on the field the ball will be thrown to and we don't? The one interception I saw wasnt due to our back's superior play or insight but a mistake by their receiver. 110 percent with continued futility weighs on a whole team
