FSU #1 recruiting, Clemson #8 by ESPN

Feb 4, 2016, 8:31 AM

I say the gap in talent is so minimal that the difference between a #1 class and #8 is getting an extra guy or 2 that are 4 star talents.

FSU has always recruited well, and always will most likely because of the lineage and great teams they have had over the years. We are coming and at their level of recruiting now, and has taken years to do it. We have beaten FSU several times over the last 10 years and all this while they recruited at or near the top every year and we were somewhere between #4 one year(2013 I think) to about #20 since Dabo has become head coach. If we recruit consistently around the top 10, which has become a reality since 2013, then we will continue to compete with the best programs in the land and are currently already among the elite after a historic 2015 of Clemson football. It is February 4th and I am as excited today as I will be come September in Auburn at Jordan Hare!!!

I put our class against any class and go right down the line with each position we picked up and see how much better any of the higher rated classes are compared with Clemson. I dare say miniscule!

Go Tigers!!

The top 10 is always pretty equal.

Feb 4, 2016, 8:35 AM

What changes is how they end up once on the field.

If you compare the size of the class and scholarships I believe Clemson came out ahead

THe key for FSU is QB. If the one they signed turns out to

be worthy of the ranking, they will be good.

But frankly, I think Jimbo is a great recruiting, 'meh' coach who was made by Jameis.

One stellar QB is equal to at least 4 other positions at 5*. That is how important that position is. Look at the clips on our newest QB. He looks like a certain QB we know as a high school senior. Not to mention the two 2017 commits.

DSU was an absolute nobody until Bowden took that job . They were a former all womens school that had never competed on any level in football .
Bowden made them . Florida HS football sustained them .

Don't put that much stock into ESPN's rankings

Feb 4, 2016, 9:12 AM

They aren't exactly "the gold standard" when it comes rankings. Rivals is by far the most accurate recruiting service. Scout is by far the worst, I'm not sure why they bother.

FSU recruits as well, or better than anybody in the country. I've never bought the ESPN argument that Alabama recruits better than FSU. That being said, our class filled needs and is really spectacular. What's even more impressive is how our classes look after 2-3 years due to excellent evaluation, player development, the NFL draft, and extremely low attrition. Clemson's adjusted-recruiting classes jump up into the top 5 over the last several years.

Signing 29 players on NDS looks great, but if after 2 years 13 of your highest rated recruits aren't on campus anymore it's all smoke and mirrors. SEC schools are famous for over signing and churning.

Dabo's got it figured out and luckily our classes look even better 3-4 years later.

If that's the case, they're all SEC biased.

When the Oregons of the world play in the Natty.....

but are constantly in the 20's in recruiting rankings, I place zero on the rankings, and 100% on need.

These coaches know what they're doing. The assessment of these kids will be known after a couple of years. Pretty exciting to out recruit others, but it's meaningless overall.

Keep in mind these types of players:

2 star ELITE QB:

3 star TIGHT END?!?!?:

Whenever Oregon plays a highly talented team with NFL talent on the lines, they get exposed. See their last few games against LSU, Auburn, Ohio State.

Their system works well when playing in the Pac-12, but they don't have enough talent to hang with the big boys.

They crushed a defending national championship FSU pretty well in the playoffs last year.

QB is an X factor

Feb 4, 2016, 10:33 AM

Plus you have to have physicality on the lines so you can't get pushed around by a Bama or LSU trying to run it 40 times on you.

As long as you can control the line of scrimmage a QB will make or break your system. See LSU with mediocre QB play for last few years is an average team. With DW4 no one beats LSU last year. With DW4 no one beats FSU, Ohio St, Stanford, OU... Etc etc...

You have to be able to match up physically, but once you can your QB play makes (clemson) or breaks (lsu, fsu) you.

Recruiting consistently around the top ten has been a reality since at least 2010 at least.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

in the Top 10, it is the QB's that make the difference...

Feb 4, 2016, 10:05 AM

if you're in or around the Top 10 or so every year

then you're going to spread your talent among the positions well

just as a matter of course -

i.e. you'll never have 4 Top 10 classes in a row simply because of skill alone,

because the talent won't stack itself up like that.

So ultimately the key position and the real game changers are typically the difference

in Top 10 classes and CFP classes.

This will be even more so now that the BCS is shelved, the SEC doesn't have quite as much pull,

and the Bama's and LSU's won't be playing each other

both in the season and the final game anymore.

Bama has found the hard way the past two years -

in the CFP, there's no ducking the hot teams and hot QB's.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Pretty accurate rankings. FSU deserves the top spot, plus

Feb 4, 2016, 10:06 AM

it keeps the ACC in the headlines. That never hurts the conference over the long haul. And for those of you that think conference stuff doesn't matter - it sure is nice to not hear "the ACC is weak" over and over. Notice how they changed the past couple of years...? Nice to have Duke and others win a few games. And the big part was us in the natty game and fsu winning it and then getting close again.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Cooper

Feb 4, 2016, 10:10 AM

If Cooper turns out to be a stud the classed will be equal. A stud QB changes everything. Bama supposedly recruited way better than we did, but we had Watson and should have won. I am hoping Cooper is the real deal. That's the only position I worry about after DW leaves after next season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't know if FSU had walkons but...

Feb 4, 2016, 10:41 AM

if they didn't then you can bet that's the difference in the two classes.

It's all based on what they did in HS. Wipe the slate clean. What they did in HS doesn't matter now. Our Coaches like our new players, that's good enough for me. Time to get to work.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We'll never win the ACC at this rate ... oh wait ... !

Feb 4, 2016, 11:48 AM

Seriously though, with all their annual highly ranked classes, The Noles still found themselves in a position of not having a legit QB and having to put all their eggs in the Everett Goulson basket this past season.

Hopefully, we're recruiting behind Watson better than Jimbo Fisher did behind Winston. I guess we'll find out down the road.

The QB position is HUGE

Feb 4, 2016, 12:31 PM

DW4 gives us a huge advantage at QB over any team we will play while he lines up at QB. There is no other team in the nation that has a QB with the prowess and pedigree to be great, DW4 is an amazing talent everyone will agree. It is nice to upgrade from a Tajh Boyd, who set just about every single record for a Clemson QB but simply did not have that confidence against the stronger teams and it showed. Love Tajh but he would get rattled and most of the time could not recover although he did provide stellar performances against LSU, OSU, and Auburn which were extremely tough games.

Having such a great QB is such a luxury and I for one do not take it for granted. Should DW4 stay for a 4th year, and I know that is very unlikely, he could be one of the greatest college QB's to ever play the game. I mean that in a nice way, I already feel like he is one of the better college QB's to play but another year, with the statistics to back it up, would make it pretty much a done deal.

Other positions are paramount as well, WR play is huge, Offensive line needs chemistry(not necessarily the highest ranked recruit) and time to gel but look at what Mitch did last year as a true freshman at left tackle. There was a reason he was ranked so highly, he was probably the best player on the field on offense behind Watson, possibly Gallman. Defensively the Safety position is extremely important, take the top off the field and force the team to beat you by driving the ball!!! More mistakes can happen from the offense when they run more plays, and a Safety taking away the deep ball threat is such a powerful position. Great safeties can also change a teams gameplan away from the passing game making them one dimensional therefore easier to beat!!

I would also argue that Defensive tackle is utterly important to clog up the middle to keep the run game to a minimal. With Wilkins and Lawrence, Watkins, and Pagano along with others this will be a key position we will win almost every time. I have a hard time believing any team will be able to establish a run game. Possibly a big play here or there for sure, but with stellar Dline play, especially the tackles, it makes the run game stagnant. Clemson team speed takes care of the edge runs, good luck with that as we typically take away the edges with such great speed.

I love what our coaches and recruiting staff did with our recruits filling needs and getting all we could get.

Go Tigers!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree completely. But the main void in Clemson's play

Feb 4, 2016, 12:39 PM

in 2015 was special teams. It could have cost us a couple of times, and did so in the BIG game.
