D-line vs. Notre Dame

Nov 2, 2020, 11:10 AM

I was sorta dismayed that we didn't get more pressure on
BC's QB. As usual BC had a pretty good O-line. And that allowed
a lot of good pass plays b/c our DB's couldn't cover for that long.

My worry is this Notre Dame line IMO is much better than BC's line.
If ND's QB can stand there like a statue all night and throw to
those big TE's, we could have our hands full stopping them.

It is my biggest concern

We should not expect to get much pressure on the ND QB.

Their line is elite!

We will have to scheme the coverage really well and hope that some of our d-linemen can play out of their minds and win some one-on-one match-ups.

I'm more concerned about holding up against their run with our lack of DT and LB depth at the moment.

Venables usually has a good plan for stopping the running game of an opponent

Let's hope he has one this time

Blitzes are the only way we can put pressure on their QB. Veneables will make the necessary adjustments.

We sack Book at least 4 times, he will be under constant pressure. The Offense scores at least 31 and we win 31-13.

Their D-Line is Elite Against Bad Defenses

Pitt 31st
Duke 52nd
Louserville 78th
FSU 76th
South FL 78th
GT 91st

I think they are as good as we have played this year but playing against the average 67th ranked defenses does not tell me they will fair well against Clemson's pass rush and run stop.

Why would they be throwing it if they can just run it right down our throats with no Tyler Davis or Skalski?

Re: D-line vs. Notre Dame

Nov 2, 2020, 11:18 AM

I have not yet seen the status of Davis, but it seems to me the D line performs much better when Davis is playing.

The defense overall played well over the course of the entire game. They held BC 100 yards under their average and shut down the run.

My concern is our DBs are not getting their heads around to find the ball on pass plays, and we have HUGE penalties that kept BC drives alive. I thought the roughing the passer call was horrible and it kept BC on the field. Not at all sure what Thomas was thinking on the targeting.

We need to get some defensive players back for this game. I think our offense is good enough to go win at ND as long as the defense holds up.

Re: ND O Line is the best we will face in the regular

Nov 2, 2020, 11:19 AM

season, no question about it. Assuming we get Davis back, I believe we will be up to the challenge. If not, this is going to be another nail-biter.

For that reason, I believe they will announce Davis' availability as late as possible so ND has no time to prepare.

Re: D-line vs. Notre Dame

Nov 2, 2020, 11:20 AM

I actually felt we got pretty good pressure on the BC QB several times, but he was doing an excellent job of standing in the pocket and delivering passes down the field anyway.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

he took several hits you saw at the game but not on TV.

Nov 2, 2020, 12:13 PM

If our backs had gotten their heads turned, we would have faired much better.

Nov 2, 2020, 11:27 AM

If Tyler plays, our pass rush should be OK. Same for run defense. One of either Tyler or Bryan should always be on the field.

We will severely miss Skalski against ND. Really concerned about them capitalizing on defensive mistakes. They are well coached.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

On the plus side, ND hasn't gotten much out of their WR corp

Nov 2, 2020, 11:35 AM

this year. On paper they don't have anyone to really challenge Kendrick and Booth. Their 2nd and 3rd leading receivers are RB Kyren Williams and TE Michael Meyer.

The challenge against ND will be our LBs and safeties helping against the run but also staying disciplined against their TEs and Williams out of the backfield.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That should be Michael Mayer, not Michael Meyer

Nov 2, 2020, 1:02 PM

Why can't we get an O-Line like ND has? Or BC, AL, GA, LSU, Coastal Carolina, Pitt, OSU, etc. To be elite, our qbs seem to be running for their lives often and we struggle every time we need 2 yrds. Something has to change. There has to be some corn fed hogs in Nebraska that would like to play for a winner.

Our OL pass blocks fine ... that zone blocking for the running game not so much. We had the BC quarterback under more pressure than they had DJ and it paid off in the 2nd half. He was a hurting buckaroo after Bresee slammed him.

When you really look at the tale of the tape, it boils down to their lack of passing. I mean, through last weekend, Ian Book has only thrown 6 TDs. Their leading receiver, Javon McKinley, has yet to catch a TD pass heading into week 10. My only concern is whether we can establish our run game and who Brent is going to use to spy Book because Jake Venables isn’t the guy. I’m hopeful that Mike Jones’ hamstring is good to go because the only weakness that I’ve seen on the defensive side of the ball is our inside linebacker, which is paramount in stopping a mobile QB like Ian Book. DJ there for 140+ more yards than Ian has averaged all year so it’s clear that his legs will be a huge part of their gameplay. I trust Brent Venables is devising a great scheme this week and I’m also positive that our secondary is hungry to makeup for their faults against both Syracuse & BC.

Can’t wait until Saturday! I’m so sick of the noise up here from these ND fans on ever corner.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Seemed to me that we were getting pressure on the BC QB

Nov 2, 2020, 1:35 PM

but he was making accurate throws under duress at the beginning of the game. I mean really kind of unbelievable throws when you look at it. His luck ran out in the 2nd half though.

Well covered. We failed to turn our heads and locate the ball for most of the first half.

That was bizarre but I expect our corners to work hard on getting their heads around this week in practice.

Re: D-line vs. Notre Dame

Nov 2, 2020, 1:47 PM

Idk if we were watching the same game or not Saturday. We had 4 sacks and ton of qb hurries. Phil from BC threw the ball of his back foot a lot. We just didn’t make him pay for it. When we did it didn’t count because roughing the passer. BC’s QB got beat up. He barely got off the ground after breese slung him down.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Will be great if Tyler Davis is back, big difference maker inside

Nov 2, 2020, 1:57 PM

if he plays then I feel much better but either way.... we need to rattle Ian Book early ??

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Based on what I read this preseason and early season,

Nov 2, 2020, 2:00 PM

BC has the 2nd best O line in the conference behind ND, and the gap is not very much between the two.

ND's O line is elite for sure, but I do think Venables will come up with a plan to stop their run as that's been their strength.

Re: Based on what I read this preseason and early season,

Nov 2, 2020, 2:55 PM

Venables is the best DC in CFB. That worries me more than anything. Our lack of WR's is the biggest concern. Our top two with elite speed were lost two weeks ago. I think our best bet is to run multiple TE sets. Our group of TE's are as good as anyone's. Mayers is a freshman that plays like a senior. I like our D and their speed. If they can keep Etienne from breaking one, we have a chance, but I think the Tigers win a close one.

talented Miami team - small QB on a running and play action passing team. BC's a throwing team with a 6'5" 230 lb. QB. Ian Book is a generous 5'11". BC can throw whether you expect them to or not. ND needs to be successful in the running game to throw effectively.

ND's defense is better than BC's, but their offense is not.

Respectfully, I’m not sure what you mean.

Notre Dame
——————
Total offense: 29th
Rushing offense: 11th
Passing offense: outside of top-50
Scoring offense: 26th

Boston College
————————
Ranked outside of top-50 in every metric above

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That is incorrect. BC is 29th in passing. ND is 71st.

Nov 2, 2020, 3:15 PM

BC averages less than 100 yards per game running. They are a pass first team. ND averages 231 yards per game rushing. ND is a running team first and play action passes off their running success. ND has to run the ball successfully to throw it a little bit. Good defenses take away your running game and make you throw it. Venables is especially good at stopping what you do best.

A lot of people are used to BC being a run first team. They are not that this year. ND is.

Re: That is incorrect. BC is 29th in passing. ND is 71st.

Nov 2, 2020, 3:33 PM

You’re right, I overlooked BC’s passing offense rank. Yet and still, it’s a fallacy to state that Notre Dame’s offense isn’t better than Boston College’s on that one metric alone. ND may be more predictable, sure, but it’s still statistically better than what we just faced in more than a few offensive categories. And despite ND’s run-first tendency; they’re actually quite balanced offensively, averaging 206 yards per game in the air & 231 on the ground.

Let’s not discount the fact that ND is allowing fewer points per game than us, and are basically neck-in-neck with us in yards allowed (passing & rushing). They’re 6th in total defense (we are 7th), just as stingy as us in the red zone, and are playing more more disciplined football, ranking 12th in penalties per game (Clemson is 38th).

This won’t be a breeze. Absolutely doable, just not a breeze. I’m thankful that South Bend won’t have its 81,000 screaming fans for sure!

offense is not. ND is 71st in the nation in passing. BC's QB could stand in the pocket, see the entire field, and hit the open man under pressure. Little Ian Book isn't going to be able to do that. Fallacy was a poor choice of words.

I guess we'll see what kind of QB and offense ND has. I doubt they score as many points as BC's offense did against us.

Fallacy: a mistaken belief, especially one based on unsound argument. :) Seems appropriate to me!

How does Notre Dame being 71st in passing offense negate the fact that they’re 29th in TOTAL offense, 26th in scoring offense & 11th in rushing offense when BC isn’t ranked in the top-50 in any of those categories? I has the confuse.

One team is ranked #4 in the nation and is undefeated... the other is Boston College lol. We made Culpepper & Jurkovec famous in back-to-back home games. I love my orange glasses too but geez! If the Ian Book shows up that I saw against Duke & Louisville, it’ll be a bloodbath. But if that kid shows up that I watched against Pittsburgh, and we’re spying him with 5.9 40 Jake Venables, it’s going to be a long game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I won't join the BC vs. ND debate but...

Nov 2, 2020, 4:18 PM

my 2 cents is ND won't score 28 points, especially if Tyler Davis and Mike Jones return. Their offenses present different sets of problems.

We absolutely must avoid TOs. ND is well-coached and will be prepared to face a freshman QB. Confusing DJ with deceptive coverage will be their primary goal, especially if we cannot run the ball (which is likely).
