Freshman Pitchers

Mar 14, 2019, 11:04 AM

There are two freshman picthers that Monte has only played in the last inning of two different games. They both seemed to strike batters out, I wonder why he is not utilizing them?

probably because he’s the coach

And knows something that we don’t.

Would guess that he’s trying to ease them in. But he also has his go to arms in the pen and he sticks to his guns most of the time.

The answer is in your question, Freshmen.

Too much too fast can lead to insecurity if they are bested

They're his secret weapons for just the right time.

There could be multiple reasons for this. I will share some of them.

1) As you stated, they are freshmen. Not all players are created equally in terms of mentality. He may be working them in slow at specific moments to give them the best chance to be successful and build their confidence.

Ruining a freshman's confidence can waste his entire season or more. Wrobleski is likely struggling with confidence right now because he was not as ready as the coaches thought.

2) Maybe they have yet to develop multiple pitches. College hitters are really good and can make adjustments.
A pitcher can have a nice inning with 1 working pitch.
A pitcher can get through a lineup cleanly with 2 working pitches.
A pitcher can have a quality start with 3 or more working pitches.

The guys you mention may be in category one and are working on developing better secondary pitches.

3) Maybe they didn't perform this well all fall and spring in scrimmages and practices.

They may be just starting to show what they can do, which could lead to them getting more innings.

There could be more reasons, but these would be the options that I would consider most likely for freshmen.

Who are you talking about specifically? O’rear & who? I’m assuming one is O’rear.
