Curious how long y'all think the current model of college football will last?

also what needs to change and are we already past the point of no return? this kind of spurred my question:

IPTAY opened up some upper deck tickets for the LSU game. Upper Deck tickets, Face Value is $250. Unreal, this model is not sustainable and at some point we will all quit caring. It’s been a fun ride, my most special memories are all Clemson games with the family.. But unless something changes soon, the fans will turn away, it just can’t keep heading down this path.

At what point to the fans give in? I just can't imagine spending $1000 for 7 home games for a family of four. And that is without even mentioning parking, food, fuel, or any other potential expenses. When is enough enough and what do the next 5-10 years bring?

Someone posted about (the real) USC being hundreds of millions in debt just for their football program. solutions were to fire employees and sell off properties just to stay in the black. This is not the Erskin Flying Fleet, but a traditional college football blue blood. I get many folks will just fade away and quit supporting. How does the recent trend correct itself, or is that just the brutal reality?

interested in any thoughts or comments. Go Tigers!

Iptay and dues are getting more and even worse when it comes to parking. Building all this new stuff takes away a lot of parking spots so every year since the softball stadium was built, they have asked for more money to keep your same spot. They said I’d have to donate like 1200 to get my lot 4 pass again bc the parking garage being built. It won’t be long til they move the motor homes to like Seneca creek bc they can fit 4-5 cars in one Motorhome space. I used to have a motorhome spot when it was 7,500 but last year it went to like 12 or 15,000 and pretty sure it went up again. To your point of So Cal a lot of that has to do with them getting hundreds of million dollars cut by trump administration. Same thing is happening to Stanford too. Go Tigers!!

Motorhome parking is in a prime location.

I've often wondered why they would waste that much space that close to the stadium.

Only answer I could come up with is there must be some big, important donors there.

I'm so frustrated with the whole thing that even in the event it changes the money grabbing big wheels of the country will replace it with something that's equally lucrative for them.

Greed begets greed.

I think it'll last until collective bargaining takes over and teams are organized in the manner of a professional league with things like salary caps, etc. Until then its the wild wild west and nobody is really in charge.

Inflation is part of it. I remember the first time I saw a green fee of $18. I said, "I can't imagine paying a dollar to play one hole of golf."

But, it's more than just inflation for sure. Live sporting events have priced themselves out of my range. My priorities are such that I might splurge and go to a game occassionally, but no way am I buying season tickets.

However, as long as there are people who can afford it and will pay it, I have nothing against the high prices being charged. Fans want winners. Fans don't want to pay $20 dollars for a ticket and see their team get blasted every week. Winning costs money.

Lotta things I don't understand. I don't understand why any company would pay 3 million bucks for a 30 second Super Bowl commercial. But, they do.

I don't understand why anyone with a wife and 2 kids would build a 10 bedroom 15 bath house even if they can afford it. But, they do.

I don't understand why anyone, even if they can afford it, would buy a Mazerrati (however it is spelled).

Heck, back in 1980 my wife and I started preparing for a major economic earthquake, "Because our country cannot sustain a trillion dollar national debt." Now we don't even blink at a trillion dollar annual deficit.

It's a matter of inflation, personal priorities, and the wonders of capitalism - supply and demand. If people wouldn't pay $250 for a ticket to the LSU game, then the price wouldn't be $250.

Where will it end? Don't ask me. My ability to predict the future is horrible.

I'm the same way. Used to attend at least one Clemson game every year but its been close to a decade since I was last in DV and I may never go back. Much easier to watch on TV and not have getting there and back taking up most of my weekend. Don't blame those who want to splurge but its just not a justifiable expense for me any more.

My unofficial survey of 60ish year olds that have watched college football their whole lives……they are sick of it, think it’s trash and they are losing interest. I think the greed is doing real damage amongst my peers.

My thought is something is going to have to break in a really big way. Don't know how old you are but it speaks to me that it is cheaper to buy a television and season package cheaper than going to a game.

Common sense is largely gone and money is currently easy... football tickets are just a reflection of something much more foundational imo.

Let’s be real—season tickets aren’t being priced with everyday fans in mind anymore. If you’re working hourly or even pulling a W2 as an engineer or similar, you're likely getting priced out. These seats are being sold to the upper-tier crowd—doctors, lawyers, accountants, and the occasional self-made business owner who can drop a ridiculous amount of money without blinking.

The last college game I went to was in 2016. Four tickets cost me $756 ($189 per person)before tailgating expenses. That was the moment I realized live games would be a rare splurge, not a regular outing.

Pro football’s no different. I once scored a “cheap” ticket to a Patriots game against the Jaguars—$330 for a corner seat in the back of the lower bowl.

Bottom line: there are enough people with deep pockets to fill those seats, so teams don’t need to worry about whether regular fans like us can still afford to go.

How much did Clemson along with FSU blow on attorney fee's trying to sue our way out of the ACC? It was stupid and a waste of time and money. We should have spend that energy getting ahead of the inevitable.

The NIL, portal, and ridiculous playoff format has all but killed it - and it was essentially overnight. I went from living for fall weekends - watched football games from noon till midnight, without fail from August till January. As soon as it became a pay to play, mercenary, NFL-lite model.....I lost nearly all interest. Instantly. Most of the former die hards I know feel this way. And once the newness of all this wears off, I think all the Johnny come lately band waggoners will go too. Its not a life style for me anymore, I basically only watch Clemson at this point. And I feel less stressed over winning or losing either. Forget about actually going to games anymore, that wholly unaffordable for my family to do more than maybe once a season to see some scrub opponent. Its sad because it didnt have to be this way.

I googled it. Splurge is the most common word used in the English language to describe short term extravagant spending.

So not a weird word unless you are tying it to some sexual connotation.

I your defense I see that it is used alot in this thread. What is sad is that just going to a football game on a Saturday has become extravagant spending.

Wife and I still go to all home games, one reason we just enjoy being back on campus and tailgating. My brother-in-law went to citadel, we used to go to occasional game with him. Lots of fun, sit where you want and little pressure to win. Might start getting season tickets there. Cheaper, and Charleston.
