It's an odd time in business-owner land.

As dawgH8N so eloquently put it yesterday (he's juana them brilliant stoners) the labor market is insane right now. My business is as busy as it's ever been and yet it's not as successful as it's ever been. Why? I can't find the help to fully capitalize on demand, and God knows it's not because I haven't been willing to pay for it.
I'm going to get creative and figure something out, but until I do, it's 11pm evenings at the office and 6am mornings, 6-7 days a week. Any other SB owners in here facing the same? Open to ideas, funny and serious.

product like it's the 5 oclock free crack giveaway in Harlem, but we can't get hourly production employees.
We're having to drop to three crews, instead of the normal 4 crew rotating shifts, because our staffing among the production ranks is so bad.
Maintenance trades are not an issue, because the pay is so good. The lower paying production jobs are having to compete against unemployment... and I guess the folks think the juice isn't worth the squeeze.

Figured the production jobs, while not great pay, would be better than the current unemployment deal. Maybe those production jobs are just as ###### as restaurant jobs.

rotating 12 hr swing shifts (Dupont Schedule)
Apr 22, 2021, 9:11 AM
|
|
4 night shifts
3 days off
3 night shifts
1 day off (quick turnaround... rough)
3 day shifts
3 days off
4 day shifts (aka hellweek)
7 days off (this is freaking nice... 7 days off every 4 weeks)
Ambient temperatures are always 120+ and can have extended periods of 140+
Employees are FILTHY every shift when it's over. Mandatory showers prior to leaving the plant (OSHA regulated).
Non-stop manual labor.
Base pay for these jobs is $15/hr. It can reach over $30/hr... but not for the entry positions that we are having trouble filling.
Makes unemployment, or fast food seem pretty tempting.... plus we drug test, so that rules out tons of folks who would fit this "skill level".

The local plastics plant in this area does the swing 3 on 2 off 2 on 3 off but they switch night and day every 2 weeks after the 3 day off weekend so you can adjust.
Still sucks. but not as bad as a 1 day turnaround

Been years since I worked at a plant (Bosch in Anderson while at Clemson - temp job, 2nd shift) - what's the point of all the rotating swing shifts? Why don't plants just have normal 1st, 2nd, 3rd shifts?

Wife of worked 3rd shift right out of school.
It was awful.
Even on the 3 day weekend, first day off was to try to get back to staying awake during the day so she could spend time with us on the second day just to use the 3rd day off to get back on nights. It's tough.

I did it for 4 years. Hated it at first, but once I adapted (you never REALLY adapt to the swinging, though), I like it alright. Super glad to go back to a dayshift job, though.
We have supervisors making $130Kish working that schedule....
Getting a week off every month is pretty dang sweet. You almost never use your vacation... or you can take a few vacation days and be off for nearly a month.
It's great for people with no kids or social life. If you just like to hunt, fish, and travel, it's pretty sweet.
One downside is you never really know what day or time it is.

night shift sounds great in theory
Apr 22, 2021, 9:50 AM

but the reality of it sux.
I've had to do a few nightwork projects in my life. I spent a summer working at Myrtle Beach Airport doing a runway project that had to be done during closed hours (11pm-6am). I though - awesome, will get to play golf during the day, do fun beach things all summer.
Not. Frickin too exhausting to be out in the 90 degree heat all day and work all night. Couldn't sleep well, or enough, in the daytime. Plus, getting off work at 6am you wanted a pizza or a burger for "supper" but that wasn't available. And yeah, weekends were spent trying to acclimate to a "normal" schedule which cannot happen in 2 days. Then you have to go back to work at 11pm Sunday night. Ugh.
That summer was basically "missing", I don't remember doing much of anything fun.

Seems to me they could save a lot of time, money, and resources by not providing health insurance while giving their employees a pay bump. There's a real easy way to spin it so employees don't feel (and really wouldn't be) screwed over.
If this is too P&R I'll take it to P&R. Seems more of a business question, though.

Employee health coverage is astronomical, and it's not required until you hit 50 employees, which, simply by my business model, is a number I'll likely never need to reach.

Are you shipping anything? If yes, t-mail me.
If no, good luck. My area of expertise falls within the area of someone ordering something, and some business entity getting that product to said customer. Love smoking a few doobies and working through some nerdy problems...but you won't meet me for a beer...so.........
I'm sure the SMB guys are getting crushed. I've been trying to get a hold of as many as I can, b/c I know if the big boys aren't able to find labor, no chance the smaller guys are.
My wife is looking for something less stressful. She's currently at 6 figures and would like options as well, if that's do-able haha
Is your business for sale? I can help there too.

I've heard the same thing. A friend in the residential cleaning business said he is constantly turning down new business because he doesn't have the staff to handle it. One of his competitors lost 75% of its cleaners since the start of COVID and has had to reduce their coverage area.
Although we don't have a lot of employees, I have heard from numerous clients, especially in small towns, that they cannot keep employees or find new employees to replace them. And almost all of those are for entry level positions.
I don't know if its the stimulus money, the increased unemployment, COVID fears, or what, but it is very real.

Which has driven them to look at increased automation. Only problem with that? Most good machine builders are slammed and don't have time. Especially for smaller projects. Also seeing lead times go out to 6-8 weeks for replacement parts, especially anything coming out of Europe. I get the feeling we're in for a big supply chain crunch very soon, and it's not just in automotive manufacturing.

It's a crazy transition period.
Apr 22, 2021, 10:02 AM
|
|
When everybody went home and businesses closed it wasn't that bad because the lack of open businesses just sent everybody to amazon and supply decreased but it was fine because demand decreased everywhere else with it.
Now we are in a crazy transitional phase where demand is through the roof because people are getting out again, businesses are reopening and needing products, but supply (like supply does) is slow to build back up.
Supply is just taking time to catch up to demand (like it always does)
So we are in a macro shortage.
And in a macro shortage, everything goes up.
I say by summer, all COVID restrictions should be lifting and by fall everything should be back to normal. Just a guess though

about semi truck hub assemblies, turbos, parts critical for pharmaceutical manufacturing lines, etc.
Borg Warner in Seneca got wiped out by a Tornado about a year ago. They had the Ford line up and running in two weeks. That would not be possible today IMO.

from the capital to the raw materials to the transportation to bring capital, raw materials, and finished products.
We shut our economy down. Built up potential monetary energy by sending heightened UE and stimulus checks.
Then tried to open back up before businesses could get their ducks in a row.
Now people want to turn that potential into kinetic but the supply chain is just not ready yet.
It's wild.

to wreck the supply chain even further, it's not a matter of being ready. For instance, say a machine shop is 6 weeks behind because he's short staffed, so now another large manufacturer is one crash away from not having tooling and having to stop production.

in that market until maybe NEXT summer (2022). And not back to where they were before Covid, just dropping back maybe 20%.

demand always ramps up during the summer because people, for some reason, want to do all of their construction during the summer.
I hope we can get a little reprieve during the winter months when construction demand decreases.

yes - this is phase 2 of the problem

phase 1 - can't find hoomans to do work
phase 2 - can't manufacture enough robots to do work
we're so far out it's stupid. 3 companies are basically buying everything we make. 30-45 weeks for stuff we manufacture. 72 weeks for certain components from Europe. insanity.

someone to post on Tigernet for you all day. There's an ample pool of qualified applicants if you're willing to overlook the horrific grammar and spelling errors.

You could try paying folks more than they’d make on welfare.

Ain’t nobody gonna work to make you a cheap living when they can live for cheap. If you can afford it, you don’t need to ask. Humans tend to get expensive.

Flexible scheduling has been helping, and I'm talking

VERY flexible scheduling. Working with and around labor's home and life schedules has helped many businesses I work with bring more help in. The more you can gear your business to remote contribution also seems to be taking root, though I work more with hospitality where that isn't normally an option.
