You think there would be more video of that 1975 team with Skip Wise. Even if was from Tobacco Road schools on the road. Only footage of Skip Wise is that IPTAY tourney games vs Penn, and of course there is that famous shot of Tree Rollins sky hook rimming out in regulation that would have beaten UNC to advance to the championship game.

He and Phil Ford were freshmen that year. Ford went on to be a two-time consensus 1st team All-American, National Player Of the Year, and Wooden Award winner. He was 2nd pick in the NBA draft and was selected Rookie Of The Year.

During their freshman years in college, Skip Wise became the first freshman ever to make 1st Team All-ACC. Phil Ford did not. Plain and simple, Wise was better than Ford. Wise was a high 1st round pick talent as a shooting/scoring guard ... at Clemson. We haven't had anybody close since then.

Sadly, he threw it all away.

I was at the home game against unc that year. You could see Skip was better than Ford. We were so pumped up after that game. So sad for him. Here is a 2021 write up re his post Clemson life.

Thank you for sharing this. I never knew what happened with him after Clemson.

I was fortunate to be in school at that time and saw every home game. He was amazing.

I was at that game as well. Wise was definitely better than Ford. He taunted Ford by taking his usual high dribble out in front daring Ford to take it. Ford couldn't.

Ultimately Wise couldn't escape the street influences of Baltimore. Had Skip Wise remained at Clemson, not only would his life perhaps have taken a different turn, but the fortunes of Clemson basketball would likely have also.

I still remember him tooling around Clemson in his Mercury Cougar. Even his choice of cars was different from the other players who got Chevrolet Monte Carlos.

What a sad waste of talent.

I played against Tree in a pickup game at Fike.


We got killed but it was AMAZING

I can still see Tree's hook shot falling off and Skip with those high dribbles and behind the head shot that was impossible to stop. Skip Wise is on of the saddest stories from sports.
