Fix this one thing on offense and things get better

Sep 27, 2021, 7:33 AM

Run blocking.

N Illinois and Kennesaw St ran for more yds on GT than we did.

SF ran for more yes on NC State than we did.

UAB ran for more yes on UGA than we did

And the coups de gras…

SCAR ran for 92 times more yds than we did on UGA.

A running game makes the passing game better. We have NO run blocking. None. Zip. Nada.

I wish it was that easy. It sounds good in theory but it’s not one of those things you can just “clean up.” It’s a whole mentality and physical ability that I honestly don’t know that we have. Offensive line has been our weakest link in recruiting for years and it’s rearing it’s ugly head now that we don’t have elite QB play to cover it up.

RPO kills this. No one can run block if they are also pass blocking at the same time. Without QB who can make the correct read instantly, before the snap in many cases, the RPO doesn't work so well. Calling actual running plays where a pancake block that leaves a lineman 7 yards downfield looking for the next guy to level is a lot better than holding back in case the pass option was taken by the guy behind you.

I know in the whole Dabo Swinney area the running backs are told to follow the blocks. Well we have a running back coach that did not have much of a line and he was the king of bouncing it outside. So since our O-line is so putrid the backs need to learn to bounce it out side and yes there will be som lost yards once and a while but there will be a lot more positive yards when a back is one on one on the edge.

Was listening to Herbies podcast and he was saying this as well, but was before NC State game. Said teams are starting to employ a defensive scheme with 3 deep , 5 underneath and forcing teams like Clemson to try to run the ball methodically. However, I thought Orvlovsky or whatever his name is made valid points in saying scheme isn't that good because it's too dependent on talent, no drop back pass plays, no play action plays, and QB only has strong arm. Still believe a running game would help a ton right now if it was consistent.

We desperately need a run game! IMO it is the #1 problem with this years team. It is embarrassing that on 1st down vs a 3 man front we seem to only get 0, 1 or 2 yards. We are constantly behind the chains which is why we have had so many 3 and outs.

I agree totally but also understand that none of the teams you mentioned were Clemson and neither Georgia, Ga. Tech or NC State had the desire to win against the cupcakes they had against us. We do not not have good enough QB's or WR's to win without the run game but it is just human nature to want to do better than your best against the best. The emotions of supporters are overruling the reality of the 100% desire and commitment of our opponents to knock us down a notch. All you have to do is watch the video of the celebration after the game in Raleigh to understand that if we do not match the intensity of of our opponents, our talent will no longer win every game.

Much of the last several years we faced highly motivated competition and consistently put up season high yardage on opposing defenses.

Both running and passing offense will improve.

Yea...uof6c ran for more yards against UGa...

but UGa pretty much cleared its bench starting early in the second half while Clemson faced the starters for four quarters.

O-line situation, it would already BE fixed. It is going to take some time and experience to fix.

And before you even spew it, I already checked the transfer portal, no help there on O-line, unless you think transfers from schools like Gardner-Webb are the answer. Anybody out there is less, at least on paper, by far, than what we have recruited.

You are exactly right!!! Our QB and receivers are good enough to win with on a high level if there is some sort of resemblance if a run game…the two problems are that our OL obviously is not good at run blocking and that’s not going to get fix is a week of in season practice time … that gets fixed in the spring or through recruiting or through the portal or through coaching changes and none of that is happening mid season!!! The other problem is that our QB and receivers are not good enough to win on a high level, consistently if they have to shoulder the entire load…and that isn’t changing in a weeks time either…

The only solution I see is to put more TE’s (one of our worse postion groups in terms of talent) on the field and less WR’s (probably our most talented position group in totality) and comitt to a run game and a more play action, bootleg type of passing game…which is totally not who we are not have been since the days of Dabos first year with Harper at rb, the baseball player at qb, and la tech HC at OC!

Seems as if there are no good immediate options…we will have a chance to win every game and a chance to lose every game except UConn, Syracuse, fsu and S Car because none of those teams can score either…wake/Pitt/bc are all toss ups depending on how the oval ball bounces and what mood the refs are in!!!

Our run blocking has been an issue for years.

We seems to have good pass blocking during the run but thats even gone now.

Not sure what the answer is, I'm really confused how we find outselves at this spot. Seems like we need a complete rebuild again, which is a 3 year process minimum. I'm really concerend.
