First down efficiency

1

Sep 28, 2023, 9:31 AM

I wonder what our average yardage gained on first down was Saturday. We did have a couple of nice long runs which may skew an average so maybe what I should be wondering is how many first downs did we have where we gained two yards or less. It just seemed like we had a lot of what I call “wasted” downs. I know this is something I could research but I’ll readily admit I’m too lazy and tech challenged to do it. And I may be way off base but it was my impression during and after the game.

You think that but here's the first first down plays to start each series, and then how each of those series ended. So, we only had 4 possessions that ended in punts.

5- punt
0 - fg
4 - TD
1- TD
5 - eoh

12 - punt
9 - TD
46 - mafah
0 - mafah stuffed
NG - fsu scoop and score
16 - punt
NG - punt
7 - missed fg
13 - time expires

Yep that is error of recency feelings. So our last 6 possessions were empty, including ones where on first down we gained 16, 7 and 13 yards. The game was there for the taking and taking convincingly.

Thanks for doing the research. Looks like 5/14 on the opening first down of each drive. I was thinking about first downs within drives as well. I knew we moved the ball well overall. Just seemed like we were “behind the chains” a lot on second down. Must not have been as much as I thought, but it felt like we wasted a lot of plays with no little or no gain.

Sure seems like we waste first down majority of the time, which makes being 2nd in the country in first downs gained even crazier
