First Day of School

Aug 21, 2019, 10:26 AM

Celebrating another small victory for my eldest son today. Being on the autism spectrum, our lifetime goal has been to 'mainstream' him as much as possible. The past 8 years have been a challenge for him with tons of therapy each week, private schools, physical development, etc.

We've built a strong network and a strong team, but he has worked his tail off through countless frustrations, challenges and obstacles.

Well ... Today he enters a public elementary school for the first time starting 3rd grade. He walked in a bit shy but confident. Wasn't sure we'd ever get to this day, but very proud of him. Kid even crushed his testing over the summer and qualifies for Advanced Academic Placement.

Today's not the finish line, but definitely a hurdle that he conquered. Now I just hope he finds a quality group of dudes to help navigate the social dynamics of school.

Thanks man! Plenty of difficulties over the years, so we latch on to the successes. Last year's baseball post was one of my favorite memories for him.

Awesome, but Advanced Academic Placement? it's 3rd grade

Aug 21, 2019, 2:22 PM

IMHO, Advanced Academic Placement is sort of a filter

Aug 21, 2019, 4:10 PM

to remove apathetic students. It is amazing what a group of bright kids can accomplish once the knuckleheads and bullies are out of the room. In particular, I would imagine autistic kids perform a lot better when some fool is not bouncing spitballs off of them.

They start clustering kids in 3rd grade

Aug 21, 2019, 4:18 PM [ in reply to Awesome, but Advanced Academic Placement? it's 3rd grade ]

Where I grew up, the rating system started in 7th grade (being in 7-1 ideal). Surprised they already have 1-2 'advanced' classes at this age. Hopefully it gives him a quieter space with nicer kids.
