Finebaum gives Venables bulletin board material.
Aug 12, 2021, 2:44 PM
|
|
It's almost like Brent called him and said, "Hey, Paul, say something about our defense. I need something to give them a kick in the butt."
And, Paul said, "Sure. How's this?"
********* "I think Clemson is (ranked) too high," Finebaum said during recent appearance on ESPN's Keyshawn, JWill and Zubin. "I'm not buying Clemson this year. I think they'll lose to Georgia in the first game, and then they really have nowhere to go, because they play a rather pedestrian ACC schedule ... I didn't like the way Clemson finished last season. I thought their defense was very vulnerable, and I don't think the quarterback swap is going to be that big of a deal because they have really great wide receivers. D.J. (Uiagalelei) is not Trevor Lawrence, but he's still really good. But to me, the defense has trailed off ever so slightly the last two years, and I think that's the issue."

Sorry. I haven't been on the board in a couple of days. I scanned the threads and missed the TNET post already covering this. (I'm old. Can I use that for an excuse?)

Yeah, that can tend to happen when you lose your entire D-Line to the NFL Draft, 3 of which were first round. Finebum picked the exact wrong time to talk about declining defense. I firmly believe this and next year are going to be anything but declining.

It also tends to happen when guys like Jake Venables start over more talented players like Vonta Bentley.

Not sure they were on top in 16 or 18. Even the best teams don’t dominate every single year. Near or around the top would be a better descriptor, and that Clemson’s D has been under Venables.

I would think the 49 points, 639 yards, and 254 rushing yards allowed would be enough of a "kick in the butt" to get motivated. A competitor shouldn't really need outside motivation after a drubbing like that.

You are right and I know the coaches and players are still painfully aware of how they were outplayed and out coached. Now having said that, could you give us Tiger fans some perspective on what kind of motivation a 41 year NC drought might produce in a future competitor? TIA

So the Georgia players meander forward with no sense of history or goals. That explains a lot. Thanks.

Only fans have the luxury of living in the past. Players are too busy focusing on the now and bettering themselves for the future to concern themselves with trivia.

Would you prefer to lose to USC by a field goal? Drubbing from a good team. Yep, that sucks. Nothing like how that loss felt to UGA fans doh…

It's funny because it's the same thing we and our own coaches have said, basically.
But when it comes from Finebaum for some reason we all hear it & respond with fury. I'm not saying I expect us not to, but I'll never understand why so many of us give him so much energy at all. Not even a little bit.
Beat UGA, jump to #1, control your own destiny, it's that simple.

beating UGa will not vault Clemson to No. 1.
The narrative will suddenly become UGa is obviously not as good as advertised and Bama is still No. 1 and should stay at No. 1 unless and until someone beats them.

I'll gladly take that bet! Could be something fun, like a 6-pack or something.
I think instead Miami gets devalued, and Alabama looks pedestrian as they often do in week 1. I'm DEFINITELY taking the under in the Alabama/Miami game.
Meanwhile, we'll beat the #5 team in the country, and we're already ranked #2. Vastly more eyes will be on the Clemson/Georgia game, too, plus it's a night game (i.e., short-memory advantage).
I don't think we STAY at #1, but I can't imagine enough people voting to keep Alabama at #1 after a sluggish win against Miami than Clemson in an exciting game against a highly-ranked UGA team.
I'm not insisting it's true, either, just to be prepared for it. FWIW, I also don't think Alabama remains undefeated through two consecutive seasons, so that won't hurt Clemson's ranking, either.

I don't think they beat the spread. They never seem to in their opener, & it wasn't just 2 years ago they didn't exactly embarrass Duke in the season opener, for example.
That doesn't mean they don't whoop Miami, though. I absolutely agree with you there.
I don't think that game is competitive enough regardless to keep Alabama at #1, that's all. I sincerely believe beating #5 Georgia or #2 Clemson makes a bigger impact.
Alabama will keep some first-place votes, but not enough.

I don't really have a problem with any defending champ being ranked #1 (especially now that the polls literally don't matter anymore), but what's different here is there hasn't been a #2 vs #5 matchup in week one in the Alabama dynasty years, either.
I still agree they'll keep some first place votes, absolutely, but all I'm saying is be prepared for Clemson to jump to #1 for a few weeks when we beat UGA (& enjoy it!)

I agree. I think Clemson would need to win by 5 touchdowns in order to get any serious consideration as #1.
IMO the game will be tight. Over the last 7 or so years, we have not played our best ball early, it’s always been more like week 6 or so. Before Dabo, one of the problems always seemed to be that we didn’t improve during the season. Mistakes you saw in week one you’d still see in week 11. Nowadays, we get rolling like a train, but the early going is not when we’re best. I’m hoping we can open like world beaters, but I’m expecting a war that could go either way.

anything Finebaum has to say. He is without a doubt the biggest joke to college football. Plus, he still hasn't gotten over the whipping Clemson gave his beloved Bama team 44-16 in the 2019 CFP.

All had people in tears that night!
Notice they didn’t even panic the slightest even at midnight when Trump was well ahead with the in person voting last fall.
They knew the fraud with the mail in ballots was going to give the election to sleepy Joe!
They knew their four years of insane propaganda, lies, literally a coup (per Matt Taibi and Glenn Greenwald) and election interference would doom Trump.
Despite all of the interference from the left had it not been for Covid Trump still would have won. I’m not typically a conspiracy terrorist but if there was ever a motivation for China to accidentally have a virus get out last year‘s election was. Now we are back to the status quo which is the elites in America in bed with the Chinese. And more senseless wars so politicians and corporatists can keep the cash machine rolling!

From ESPN and 24/7 and other sports sites. It’s crazy!
SEC and Ohio State fans actually believe Clemson steals signs and that Venables is a fraud and sucks when he can’t cheat.
