Finally caught my 1st crappie of the year off my pier

I always tell folks the 1st one comes into my cove on March 1 and my 5th grade granddaughter kept me from being wrong- after making sure they didn’t arrive early due to warmer days by fishing for 2 weeks with no crappies , she cast one time on Wednesday and caught a nice one. Beat me by 2 days and kept reminding me that she got the 1st one of the year.

I've always heard that Croppie was the correct name also, but you want ever hear of true southerners call them anything but what they are in the south, and that's a Crappie. Only Yankees will catch and eat a d a m n Croppie!!!

How do you catch crappie? I'm on Lake Greenwood and don't know anything about fishing. Supposedly they are good around here and fisherman hang around my dock

Either use minnows underneath a bobber or

Get crappie jugs about 1/16 ounce and pull it around your dock- if you have any brush under it you should catch some

Yep, that's it. Before my brother passed, he would icepick holes in a few cans of cheap dog food and drop in over his brush tops right before that started to bed, and he could catch the limit everynight until he stopped feeding them the dog food. They would leave his neighbors brush tops to feast on his dog food, minnow's, and crickets....

Sounds believable! I know we use cat food to bait our crab cages.

IMO, Crappie are the best tasting fresh water fish we have, Redbreast are #2, and Bass, small or large mouth are #3. Those are my 3 favorite fresh water fish to eat IMO....
