Fellow Youth Sports Coaches, Parents, etc, GITT and tell me

Mar 2, 2022, 9:53 AM

how I should have handled this situation.

A little background:
Greenr coaches his Church's 8-9 Biddy Basketball team (actually, one of our two 8-9 teams, we got alot of kids). I've been coaching this league for 3 years, I think, so this aint my first rodeo. The rules of this league are simple, try to dribble, full height goals, defense has to be inside 3-point line, four five minute quarters, score RESETS every quarter. In this league, there is no ACTUAL winner, but the kids all keep score and know who wins. Greenr's team has not lost in 2 years. We lost most of the ballers from last year and just reloaded with MOSTLY 8 year olds. We only have 3 nine year olds, and one of them is pretty bad, she cannot shoot high enough to get it to the rim. We have fun though, get equal play time, and run like hell out there.

Let's set the scene:
Last Friday, we are playing a local Baptist church, one of the larger churches in the area. All 9 of my kids are there, so we are going to be rotating kids through like crazy, almost two different teams in each quarter. Only one referee is there and he MAY be 16. The other one never showed up.

First quarter starts and I have a kid in there who is a great ball-handler but he is BAD undersized so when he gets tired, he cannot hit shots. They scored first though and then he starts hot, couple steals with a fastbreak layup and another missed hard foul on him.

One of my kids, let's call him John, is playing for the first time in his life. John has two sisters, one plays ball and the other dances. John is uncoordinated, tiny, goofy, but hustles. I realized he wont score many points, if any, this year, but he can play hellla defense around the perimeter. Also, sometimes John gets kangfused and does the wrong thing, but it's OK, they almost all do SOMETHING wrong during the game. Well, we miss a shot and the other team gets the rebound and attempts to bring it back down the court. John, in his excitement, tries to steal the ball from them WELL before he gets inside the 3 line. The ref ignores it because he realizes it and gets into position. No biggie. Same thing happens again a little later and I can hear the parents for the other church, let's call them West End Baptist, yelling and I see one mama, with an infant in arms, jump up and start yelling. Well, it gets a little chaotic, ref is doing nothing, and JOHN has made this mistake twice. Maybe he did it a third time, but I kept yelling to him to get back into the 3 line. He would hear, then do it. No biggie. West End's kids don't even dribble. They are terrible. They just pass and run with the ball. I ain't complaining. Quarter is over and JOHN and 3 others come out. I put my other kids in and we keep dominating. Halftime comes and it is 10-2 but should be much worse.

Greenr talks to the kids at halftime and the ref asks me to remind the kids to stay in the 3-line, so I do. I specifically grab John and one of my girls to remind them, although she wasn't doing it but I didn't want to call John out specifically. Halftime is almost over and I hear a commotion to my side. I look over at the other teams bench and one of their coaches is LOUDLY complaining about us "breaking" this rule. Then a mom, the same one jumping around with an infant in hand comes up to me and asks me if I have ever heard the rules for this league.

The exchange went something like this:
Lady: Have you ever heard the rules of this league? You know, we are supposed to stay inside the 3 point line.
Greenr: Yes ma'am. I've addressed it with the kids.
Lady: Seems to me that you don't want to teach the kids the rules. All the other teams haven't had a problem with this.
Greenr: We are learning the rules, this is his first time playing basketball and we are working on it.
Lady: Obviously that is your kid and you don't want to teach your own kid how to follow rules. We teach our kids how to follow rules.
Greenr: This is an 8-9 year old league basketball, they are learning to play, and no that is not my kid.
Lady: I guess that is your kid then.
Greenr: Sweetie, that is not my kid and that doesn't matter. Thank you for your coaching advice.
Lady: (mad at me for calling her sweetie) You don't talk to me that way. We are respectful and follow the rules and obviously you don't do those things.

Somehow the conversation ended. I don't remember, but I was running HOT AS HELL at this time. Wife was texting me wondering what TF was going on, she could see the lady fussing at me but she couldn't tell from my body language what was going on. Apparently I handled it well from that perspective.

Second half, we keep dominating to the point where I pull most of my good players in the 4th. We win 16-2. It could have been much worse. We never played defense outside the 3-line again.

End of game, Wife comes up to me asking WTFF happened and I tell her I'll explain later, I gotta get TF out of this place. She walks away and up to me walks a fatass redneck. Tells me he needs to talk to me about something.

Conversation goes a little like this...

Fatty: (whispering) If you ever talk down and disrespect a woman again, I'm going to have to beat your hiney. (yes, he used the word hiney).
Greenr: Sir, I didn't disrespect her, but I shouldn't have used the word Sweetie talking to her.
Fatty: You shouldn't have and you should learn to talk to women. You were talking down to her and blah blah blah blah blah. (At this time I am so hot and contemplating the consequences for fighting fat redneck in a church gym that I missed some of what he said)
Greenr: Sir, this is an 8-9 year old basketball league, they don't even keep the score. But that lady questioned my coaching and my parenting and I took offense to that.
Fatty: Parenting? She doesn't even know you have kids or which kid, how can she question your parenting?
Greenr: EXACTLY, but she assumed the kid ya'll are mad about was my kid, then questioned my parenting.
Fatty: How can she question your parenting if she doesn't know which kid is yours (this was a terrible argument, btw). And you were talking down to her and you shouldn't do that and you should teach the kids the rules, etc......
Greenr: Sir, you are being a HELLUVA lot more condescending than I was to her..
Fatty: (Cuts me off because I used HELL in a church gym) What did you say? We are in a gym. (He may have levied another threat at this time, it all runs together).

Conversation over...Greenr goes to leave and the lady, who it is now apparent is married to fatty, is parked next to me. I kept a smug grin on my face the whole time. Then I have to explain to wife and daughter what was happening.

Anyways, I am sure you guys have run into situations like this. It ruined my weekend though because I bounced between regretting saying anything to them at all and regretted not dropping that fat motherfucker on the gym floor in front of everyone.

How would you handle this situation?

2024 purple level memberringofhonor-greenr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, that is a WALLOFTEXT, enjoy the TLDR

Mar 2, 2022, 9:54 AM

Greenr got threatened by a fat redneck at an 8-9 year old basketball game because he called the man's wife "Sweetie" when she confronted Greenr for his coaching and parenting.

2024 purple level memberringofhonor-greenr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Now this I can handle.

Mar 2, 2022, 9:57 AM

Sweetie should only be used when talking to your own daughter or wife. Or if you're old you can call your grandkids that. No one outside the family.

Best thing to do is to get your wife to go all crazy southern woman on the man. I'm talking full blown trailerpark Karen. He won't do nothing to her.

Then post pigs of her tiddies in here.

Mar 2, 2022, 10:07 AM

daughter. In this conversation with the Lady, I felt like I was explaining something to a 10-year old, so it slipped out.

You don't want to see the tidds. They probably were not worth it.

much like Greenr's situation. I just didnt walk away as the dude was talking crap about my team, which consisted of two super autistic kids out of the 4 that day. I should have in hindsight, but I didn't and quietly told him to either shut up or I was going to shut him up.

That is the story, no matter how you want to twist it up.

Super Autistic kids? No wonder he complained.

I mean even if they're autistic, the fact that they have super abilities just makes it not far for the rest of us humans. What could they do, fly? Laser eyes? Super strength? Super speed? Talk to animals?

Coached youth sports for over a decade.

Mar 2, 2022, 10:41 AM

Had to cool out situations with my parents as well as parents on other teams more than a handful of times. Usually, I could keep calm and reason with the idiots. Only once did it look like it was going to come to blows with a parent from another team. I told the guy that if he wanted to go somewhere away from the kids and city property and was willing to sign a waiver absolving me of any injury I might inflict on him that we could leave as soon as he signed it. That kinda dumbfounded him and he walked away. I think we played that team one more time that season and I don't remember seeing the guy there. Have never seen him since.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not sure how you could have handled it any better.....

Mar 2, 2022, 10:48 AM

Maybe sticking with "ma'am" over "sweetie", but in my book you showed proper restraint.

To have a parent from an opposing team confront a coach, not to mention at half-time, about a simple defense rule in 8-9 yo BB is nutz. I would have talked to the opposing coach about it after the game. Told him you were trying to teach the kid the rule, but that he might want to talk to his parents.

And then to have a parent threaten you after the game. I believe I would have asked for the man's name and thought about reporting him to his church.

I know if one of the parents on my team acted like that I would have wanted to know and the director of our league would have, at the very least, talked to them and, more probably, banned them from future games.

That is just nutz.

This was our last year of Upward sports in Anderson 'cause kids will be too old next year and we'll miss it. I've coached in Upward since my son was 4 in Augusta and then in Anderson...in both soccer and basketball and I've never seen anything like that happen. Heck, even in rec ball, I haven't seen anything like that exactly, but it certainly is different than Upward.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

She confronted the 16 year old ref, their coach, then me.

Mar 2, 2022, 11:23 AM

She is the one completely in the wrong, but I would imagine that is par for the course for her.

2024 purple level memberringofhonor-greenr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If their coach didn't tell her to....

Mar 2, 2022, 11:30 AM

sit the heck down, then it's on him too.

I can't fathom having an outlook on life where a few missed calls in 8-9 bb would get me that upset as a parent. Maybe....maybe...if they were hard fouls going uncalled and the game was getting out of hand and you were worried about a kid getting hurt and your kid's coach didn't seem to be saying anything....maybe I would say something to our coach.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Seems like you handled it the best way possible.

Mar 2, 2022, 10:49 AM

You stood your ground but didn't escalate the situation. You kept your cool when the man came over again. The woman was way out of line. This is clearly a league geared towards teaching skills. She should never have approached you. Calling someone "sweetie" doesn't seem all that bad. It may be condescending but condescension can also deescalate.

Some of this is on the league for not having enough admin/refs. I volunteered to coach in a similar league a few years ago because my church ran it and they badly needed help. One year went great. The second year was awful: kids disrespecting the refs, parents being worse, not enough players to bench the ones acting out. That was the last time I do that until my son is old enough to play.

Thoughts

Mar 2, 2022, 11:30 AM

-Was this Upward Bound basketball? I reffed some of that when I was a teen; yeah, definitely a bunch of hicks getting way too worked up over a game with no scoring.

-You should have threatened her life like Manac did that flag football coach. What could go wrong?

-If you're in the Upstate, people in the ####### Upstate take church basketball too seriously. I played in Spartanburg and it was dirty AF: recruiting practices, refs throwing games for First Baptist Church (dirtiest church in Spartanburg, and yes it is, #### off if you disagree). We once almost had a brawl after a game when the old man coach for them tried to fight our coach for calling out their sportsmanship. Ended with this big ole Gaffney kid (we recruited him) who never said two words all season telling the old coach he was gonna cut him in the parking lot.

-Seriously, if you want to play real hardball, try to get them and their future redneck kid banned from the league.

Re: Not Upward. Our 13-18 year old girls won the championship

Mar 2, 2022, 11:38 AM

My sister played one season when she was 8 or 9, I think. I went to one of her games. Final score: 2-0 in overtime. Her team lost.

My dad once told another dad to get a hold of his son after his boy mooned the crowd after hitting a three (and played for First Baptist so the cheating ref didn't T him up). His dad cheered wildly. Other dad tried to fight my dad. I think our age group was around 13 at the time.

In hindsight, kinda funny.

I do, however, recommend you recruit some Gaffney kids to your team the next time a parent wants to bow up on you. That'll get shut down quickly.

I can provide some insight, stories, jokes, and a free wall

Mar 2, 2022, 12:00 PM

of text.

I limit my involvement to sometimes helping at practice, but no game-time stuff, except when my kids were playing teeball. I watch 100% of my kids practices, focus on them, so I can work with them on our off-days. It's just more fun for me, and I am terrified of being in charge of other people's kids and dealing with parents.

We're only doing county rec league sports now-a-days and it's not too bad. Saw a rednecky dude get tossed from a 9-10 boys playoff basketball game for saying the F word. Ref just said "you need to leave". The guy threw up his hands and left. Pretty tame, tbh. Our refs are all SC high school league refs that are adult, and mostly professional. Some are actually pretty dang good. I remember when we were doing tee ball, they would have kids reffing the games and it was horrible - not the kids fault... but yea, it was bad.

My daughter closelined a girl who was going for a layup in a 9-10 girls playoff basketball game. A good hard Detroit Pistons type foul... not completely like this iconic foul Kevin McHale layed on Kurt Rambis.... That girls dad started hollering and looking for the other girls dad (aka me). I just layed low. Not about to get in a fight. Asked daughter about it after the game and she said, "well I didn't want to foul her and get a three point play, so I had to make sure she wouldn't make the shot. She missed the freethrows, so its all good." Sound logic.

You shouldn't have said "sweetie".
I hate it when I get that blurred tunnel vision that is brought on by rage. Like it takes every molecule in my body to keep from losing it, so I can't see, or hear anything. Your body just goes into autopilot and you do your best to not swing at someone or cuss. I am always super scared when I get like that because I know I'm about a millisecond from going to jail. Luckily I always seem to do good though. Sometimes I do dumb stuff like make up cusswords and call people stuff like "Shitfuck" or "ratshitmotherucker"...
Shake it off dude - I know it's hard though. I fully trust that you were the more-correct person in this altercation. Just keep telling yourself that THEY'RE the ones that are white trash and not you.

Have we all overlooked the obvious?

Figure out which kid on the other team is hers, and then hard foul after hard foul after hard foul...............

MauldinT, where are you???

Imma be honest. I felt bad for those kids on that team.

Mar 2, 2022, 12:51 PM

They were absolutely terrible. They only had one kid that could dribble. They made the first shot of the game and barely got any other shots off the rest of the time. That includes when I tried to get our kids to quit playing defense the 4th quarter.

I also could not determine which kid was hers.

Dude, I have a HARD and SOLID rule

Mar 2, 2022, 12:58 PM

No one, except a player or a ref is allowed to talk to me on game days. Zero tolerance for negative interactions. Do I relax this by telling moms and dads good morning or how are you ? Yep, but if you come to complain to me, I will ask the ref to remove you. I will not answer a call or email on the same day either.

Parents have got to learn boundaries.

I'd say you handled it pretty well, but probably engaged

Mar 2, 2022, 1:08 PM

a bit too much. I'm extremely good at spacing out and ignoring parents, other coaches, and kids when I'm coaching.

The more aloof the better. Connect with the kids, but don't engage enough in the situation that a parent or coach even feels like you are approachable, and if they do, just ignore them.

I feel my responsibility is to make sure they don't get hurt, they don't yell at their teammates, and maybe they learn a little about the sport. Normally I get the kids that didn't have a bunch of friends and former teammates to sign up, so it's a bad news bears situation. But it makes it more satisfying for them and you when they finally do pull off a win.

The only time I had anything like this was coaching i9

tl:dr 6 year old baseball, mom tries to explain everything I was doing wrong then got lippy. I handed her (literally) the shirt off my back and walked away.

Trying to teach 6 year olds how to play baseball in that weird-ass modified coach pitch. To set the expectations - this is the level we're playing - coach gets 3 pitches, if they can't hit it (bad pitches or swinging misses, doesn't matter), they get to hit off the tee. i9 Sports, for those who haven't played with them, sessions are once per week, 30 minutes practice, 60 minutes for a game. No, you're not allowed to organize off-schedule practices. The group does keep score, tho, part of their philosophy is that you have to teach kids what it's like to lose and how to "lose" correctly.

My philosophy at that age was always "every kid plays and we rotate positions so they can learn at all positions." Practices were always hectic because it's 6 year olds and, let's face it, baseball is a lot of standing around and waiting. It's boring for kids that age.

We lost our first couple games. After one practice/game session, I had a mom, who clearly thought her son was going to grow up to be the next A-Roid, try to explain everything I was doing wrong and how I should get the kids under control if we have any chance to win. And then she started into all the drills that Junior does on his 6-year-old travel team (that practices 2-3 times per week).

I calmly explained that I was a volunteer, as was the other coach that was out there with me. We were doing the best we can and, unlike the Bandits' coach, we were not i9 employees.

"Well, why did you volunteer if you clearly don't know how to run this team?"

Excuse me? At that point I took off the bright red COACH shirt that i9 had given to me (sweaty from herding 6 year olds for an hour and a half) and handed it to her.

"Clearly then, you should be wearing this."

And I walked away shirtless. Craig, who runs the local i9 franchise, sees me walking away, fuming and sees the shirt on the ground where she dropped it, asked what happened. I explained. Admitted I handled it poorly, but also that I didn't volunteer to put up with that bullshit (which he agreed). He gave me the "don't do that again" and said he'd talk to her.

I gathered my things and my 6-year-old and, as I walked off to the car, I could hear Craig reminding her of the Parent's Pledge to not do that ####, that I was a good coach and had been volunteering with i9 across multiple sports for 2+ years and that she needed to check herself (that made me feel better).

I never heard from her again that season.

I like the Teaching Kids to Lose Properly lesson. My son

Mar 2, 2022, 2:47 PM

needs that BAD. He brags to his brother and sister that they have never lost. I want to lose a game for that reason, but am competitive AF and like to see my teams get better.

Luckily in little league football, we learned to lose very early and often. I lost every game for 2 years running.

Yeah. I've borrowed Dabo's "the fun is in the winning"

Mar 2, 2022, 2:51 PM

when the kids win.

And the losses were always followed with "what did we learn?" and that if we learned something to improve on after the loss, then it wasn't that bad.

Much better than I would have.

It's #### like that that makes me glad to have "I travel every other week" as a crutch to not have to volunteer to coach.
