Fellas...I started off the day yesterday taking Mrs. Spud and

My daughter out gorgeous a $126.00 breakfast and ended the day enjoying a $300.00 steak dinner with Mrs. Spud at the oldest steakhouse in America...founded in 1868. Made a couple of new friends in Henry and Josea who both immigrated here the old fashioned way. Josea from Mexico in 1988 and Henry in 1985. They would both fit right in with my redneck friends in Powdersville....And hopefully...they are both now Clemson fans! I did my best represent us well...

At least tell us where that steak house is. I can tell it's not the Wallhalla Steak House!

And is the sideways pic dessert or breakfast? Looks good whichever it is!

Those places are for folks that have a lot of money and wants to show off, or they wish they had a lot of money and trying to make folks think they have something that they don't have. I don't see any other reason to allow yourself to get over price raped!!!!

my own. I meant to ask Henry what percentage of the customers come, say, once a month versus every two or three years. There was a table next to us, with 4 young people in business attire. Mrs. Spud heard one of them introduce two of the others as the CEO of this or that co. I also told Henry, about 30 seconds after I met him, that I felt like I was in The Godfather!! It just had that feel...He said,"He said, but that is make believe....I am the real! I'm from Albania!"

Nice work Spud -- as a cake eater and a father! That cake looked fabulous. And I have always remembered your post about your daughter's success at that other Columbia, so I hope you had a nice family visit.

Does the Walhalla Steak House even serve steak. I thought it was a chicken place.

NY, Chicago, New Orleans or Vegas are places I have never wanted to go.

National Championship in Arizona I had connecting flights in Chicago, New York and Philly that’s coming and going combined) but was not there long enough for it to even matter.

Stay safe!

OK, I'm just curious, not trying to be a jerkwad or anything....

1

Apr 29, 2023, 1:22 PM

but why exactly do you have no desire to visit NYC, Chicago, New Orleans, etc? I am always puzzled when I read posts like this. I'm with you on Vegas, not near as much fun as it was 40 years ago... now it's just Disney World in Nevada. I guess I've just always loved to travel and experience different cultures, food, and whatever. I just can't imagine never experiencing those things. The seafood in Boston, San Fran, Seattle, Baltimore. The steakhouses in Chicago. The scallops in Nova Scotia...

Secondly, I could throw a half eaten Hardee burger in the back yard and come up with a better steak than TR.

Thirdly, based on your post, I am not sure you get truly understand all that your handle means.

My son & daughter-in-law lived in Manhattan for several years. NY City has many great and fabulously expensive restaurants, hotels and entertainment places. It’s fun to visit, but old Dugatiger has zero desire to live there. BTW the kids now live in CT, and it’s very pretty there, but still very pricey, too.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep, things like that are something that you BETTER take

3

Apr 29, 2023, 8:22 AM

into account if you are moving into those areas from other, not so expensive areas. There really is a "salary adjustment" that has to be included to make those moves plausible in most cases.

I like to go into the city about once every 5 years. 1 or 2 days and I’m good for another 5 years. NYC is just like the Zoo, except it’s for people. Go down there, see all the animals, don’t need to go back for 5 years.

Carmines in the Theatre District is good. Don’t know if it’s considered legit or touristy, but the servings are huge and it’s always busy. I like several spots in Little Italy. Something about the Mafia vibe feels authentic.

Apr 29, 2023, 6:36 PM

Spud, I always love your messages - you are an upbeat person, and that persona comes through in your notes - you enjoy life and living it, and your messages reflect it.
There are several steakhouses of the same ilk in NYC, with one of the most notorious being Sparks, where a mafioso soldier was gunned down at the street, under the restaurant canopy, years ago. Our eldest went to law school at Columbia, and so we got to visit as a "local", a time or two - and that was all we could afford for sure. Even then (2001-2004), a 6 oz. filet at Sparks was $50 or so, and the sides were exactly as Spud described - garlic mashed taters for $30, 5 sticks of asparagus for $30, etc. On the positive side, it's hard to remember a steak as good as the filet at Sparks - buttery soft with a taste to die for - literally, if you believe the guy in the gutter. NYC is a fun place to visit, with experiences and tastes that you cannot find, or afford, elsewhere - it's fun to splurge for special occasions - but i would not want to live there or within 10 area codes!!! R/TLM btw, I delivered my son to his apartment at Columbia on 9/3-9/4, and to celebrate getting him moved in, we did one of those extravagances for special occasions - we ate lunch at Windows On The World, atop the World Trade Center (I, I think). It was other worldly, just over a week later, to watch the video and photos, and realize that the folks who served us the week before were undoubtedly some of the very victims we were seeing!!

BTW, Spud - if you want a "local" experience, try the sandwich shop directly across the street from Carnegie Hall - you will have to fight for a place to sit, and will get elbowed all throughout the meal, but they have some of the best local and kosher sandwiches you will ever taste, Their Reuben is spectacular. Also, the River Cafe is literally on the water, underneath the Brooklyn Bridge, on the Brooklyn side of the East River. Excellent food, and the view is spectacular - second to none. You will recognize it from several movies. R/TLM
