It isn't, it is just something ESPN trotted out.

Pretty sure the CFP committee pays it no attention at all.

The FPI was created using the BCS formula as a basis.

The BCS formula faithfully served the SEC for years. The theory that the POC's final rankings would affect the preseason polls of the coming year ESPiN needed metrics to gauge teams by which they could input their subjective opinions. Thus, the SOR, FPI and other metrics were born.
The final FPI looks accurate but before the final game it is just something to talk about and typically not something I would use to select winners and losers by.

and watch how the wins and losses have very little effect on the Big 10 Schools positions in the ranking. They either stay the same or move up after a loss and then another loss.

FPI has a margin of victory/point spread bias

Penn State and Ohio State ran up the score in many of their games.
It's also typically why Oklahoma is usually rated pretty highly (except this year when their margins of victory haven't been so big).

So, you're saying it's a harbinger of what is to come in the play-offs for teams like OklaMomma and tBucknutz? Is that about right?

Hmm, OSU gets a mud hole stomped in them by a 6-3 Iowa team and Penn State loses their second consecutive game and they're still 2 and 3?
Sounds like ESPN is trying to make the B1G what the SEC used to be for their spin cycle.

Just shows why the Computer BSC formula was bs and programs like this is why we moved to a playoff so we can't have division oppenents playing for title or 2 2 loss teams "ranked higher in FPI". It had FSU in the top 25 they might not win 6 games this year. The ESPN FPI is obviously a joke and don't even know why ppl bring it up or use it bc it obviously has no clue haha.

Would Clemson be ranked above OSU
Nov 6, 2017, 11:23 AM
|

had we lost to Auburn and then to Louisville by 31, and OSU's only loss was by a FG to Indiana while playing without JT Barrett? Uh, NO!
FPI IS Garbage! It had us ranked below OU after we beat them in the semis 2 years ago.

What is ESPN's criteria for the top 5 strength of record

rankings? Having Miami in the top 5 makes no sense... considering that they were unbeaten and only ranked 10th by the CFP selection committee given their unimpressive strength of schedule. Get it together, ESPN.

ESPN's FPI is a mathematical model that's as accurate at predicting an outcome as the input conditions and model parameters. It will get more accurate as the year goes on so the model matures. The BS factor is it's hyped to indicate real football power potential with no real credit for human emotion for affecting an outcome, as well as weather conditions and other unpredictable sports conditions like injuries..
What's that really mean? It's a blunt axe trying to act like an accurate cutting blade to differentiate who might have a better team. Bottom line, ignore it. It can be and often is wrong. Sorry ESPN.

Does Sagarin have the same bias as ESPN?
Nov 6, 2017, 1:25 PM

Because his computer rankings still has Penn State at #2 and Ohio State at #6. In fact, his computer algorithm has the same teams in the top 10 as ESPN's FPI (though the order is a little switched around). Computer algorithms have problems. That's why the CFP committee is made up of humans.
