So it would've still been our ball... Just 4th and 7 instead of 4th and 15.
In no universe was that ever a fumble. Simply a completion or incompletion.

He was driven backwards 2 or 3 yds prior to the "fumble"

He wasn't purely running backwards on his own. Sure it was a comeback route. But that also establishes the need for a football move needed to make it a catch.
Incomplete was the correct call. But the only argument could be that Ross was screwed out of a 7 yd gain.
A fumble was impossible in the scenario.
