Estimate for replacing windows/doors in 38 year old house

almost equals total cost of building the entire house. Inflation is tough. I remember a 5 pound bag of sugar being 49 cents - now 10 times that for 4 pound bag. What do you older guys remember? (Not that you need to be old to have seen big increases).

Prices are crazy right now and are unlikely to go back down unless something really bad happens. Inflation is the primary reason I am working a few more years.

BTW, I remember when the min wage went up to $3 per hour and I got a raise at my PT high school job.

Those were the days!

Students including my older sister drove the buses back in the day and I don't any issues other than one guy was able to remove the governor off his bus for a little extra speed. Is it any worse to have a retire person driving the bus than a 17 year old?

On afterschool "dates" he used to pull the bus up to the drive through at Rush's lol. Also, he was a late bloomer and so short he had to stack pillows to sit on to be able to see while driving. When I got my first job in 1978, the minimum wage was $2.00 an hour. I was making $6.00 an hour.

Chick-fil-A currently pays high school and college age kids between $15.00 and $20.00 an hour.

If you want to attract and retain good workers, you have to pay them.

In this economic climate, there is no way a person working full time could survive on $7.25 an hour which is less than $14,000 per year. For a single person in US, the 2023 federal poverty level is $14,580.

The $15 an hour people are fighting for is hardly enough to live either.

$32,000 doesn't get you far even in the most rural of communities.

If you look at the pay rates and benefits packages of McDonalds franchies in Europe you can see that their is still plenty of profit available when you aren't paying poverty wages.

That is incredibly inaccurate and outdated.

1, high schoolers make up an extremely small percent of the work force. The last two fast food places i went to were entirely staffed by adults. Also, very poor logic to think that HS kids can work your tuesday lunch rush 9 months out of the year.

2, you cant paint all high school kids with the same brush. every situation is different. I had friends in HS who had dead beat parents so they worked nights / weekends to provide for their siblings.

3, despite your lack of respect for the service industry it isnt a dead end job. Tons of opportunity in that field.

If you bought a gallon of gas for 32 cents in 1973, factoring in inflation over the past 50 years that same gallon would cost $3.16 in 2023. The average price of a gallon of gas last week across the country was $3.00.

The price of gasoline hasn't even kept up with inflation yet people complain more about gas prices than anything they buy.

Awww, us old (or older) people reflecting on "the good ole days". In the early 80's, I worked about 35 hours a week in a Quincy's Family Steakhouse during high school. That's six nights a week, and I got Tuesdays off (woo hoo).

I think I started at 3.25/hr and a year and a half later was making 3.35/hr. When the rest of my high school friends went off to college, they "bumped" me to 3.50/hr. Because the steakhouse was only at night (35 hours a week, mind you), my dad thought I needed a day job also. I took a job in a rug company for 4.00/hr (40 hours a week) and "reduced" my steakhouse hours to 30.

Two jobs, 70 hours a week, and too tired to spend any of it....I saved enough to pay for my first year at Clemson the following year.

.....went to Homely Depot and purchased double pane, argon filled w/the dividers in them. They cost less than $200 each and I installed them myself. I ordered 2-3 at a time and paid as I went. I had no knowledge on the technique and no YouTube, only Bob Vila on Saturday mornings to coach me as this was 30 years ago. I`ve had to go back to HD and order weatherstripping and various hardware and they still make it good.

I remember, in the early 1950's, riding with My Dad and Grandfather to purchase gas for .06 cents a gallon in North Carolina. Filled up gallon jugs and other containers and my job was to hold them up without spilling on the way back. They both were in the front seat with My Dad smoking a cigar and my Grandfather a cigarette. We made it back to Winnsboro. In 1964 I graduated from High School on a Thursday night. The next day at 3:00 P.M. I went to work in the Cotton Mill making. $1.25 an hour. By the end of the Summer I was making full pay, $1.65 an hour. I was glad to see Newberry College in September.

I cropped (or "primed"...depending on where you're from) tobacco for $1.15 per hour from around July 4 through Labor Day. Would make enough to buy my school clothes in September. The second summer we worked so much overtime that I also got myself a $65 ten-speed bike!

Nothing like getting up at 5am to be in the fields by 6am...working until 6pm...then going to football practice at 7pm. And back in those days the first week of football "practice" was nothing but running.

I worked 55 hours/week in the summer for $110 cash. Min wage I think was $3.35 but I didn't have to pay taxes and when I started I was only 14 so I was cool with it. Bought my first car for $600 from that job (1974 Toyota Celica).

had hand dipped ice cream cones for a nickel and bottle cokes for about the same price. If you were lucky enough to find a coupon from a newspaper or from a package, the store owner would take it instead of money if he had that product in stock - talk about "No purchase necessary"!

At this very moment I'm sitting in a house on the River Road in louisiana. The windows and all the doors are at least 150 years old. Beautiful and sturdy with most of the original wavy glass. These days you're lucky if your windows hold up 25 years.

My house was built in 1905 and still has the original front door and all of the windows. I've been tempted to have them replaced for better efficiency, but I can't bring myself to do it. The wavy glass is always a good conversation piece when folks come over.

I just got my entire house painted inside and out and it cost $20,000(best quote by far). In 2009, I actually bought an occupied rental HOUSE in a mill village for $22,000.

Here is a personal example:
In 1995, I purchased my home at a cost equal to 3x my salary. That same home today would require nearly 5-6X my salary.
Income has not kept up with the cost required to achieve the American dream (home ownership). Throw in the last 2 years of across the board inflation, and it’s been brutal. Forget the government manipulated CPI data. We can easily see that we are paying 50-100% more for goods than we were 3 years ago.
Unfortunately the trend looks to continue to rise at a higher than average rate over the next few years.
