If it's about eyes on football games and the university's commitment to football, UNC ain't topping the list. Maybe if it's about getting away with decades of academic fraud to advance athletics.

It’s about TV markets and brands. North Carolina is untapped for the SEC, and UNC is a huge brand.

It absolutely has nothing to do with markets. That’s old school 2010 crap. It’s about eyeballs and money and power. Clemson, FSU, and ND bring strength and money to the conferences.

Seriously - UNC can't even fill the stadium in Charlotte when they play there...

That goes for ACC Champ games, neutral site games, and bowl games. UNC has a huge following in the state but they can't seem to break away from their wine and cheese parties to fill the stadium or watch their football team play on TV

I get they may be desirable but not the #1 desirable team in the ACC. I think that has to be FSU & Clemson.

UVA is 2nd? What do they bring athletic-wise? It must be for recruiting reasons.

Markets do not equal eyeballs. Markets died with the invention of streaming. It’s all about matchups, and what teams get watched/steamed the most, and according to data going back at least a decade, Clemson has hovered around the top 10, FSU around the top 15, and UNC around 50. In fact, UNC is not even the top draw in their state. Basketball viewership is also irrelevant S the pinstripe bowl draws a bigger audience than a Duke/UNC game. Pete appears to have stopped doing any journalism when he joined ESPN.

So tired of the regional TV markets nonsense. And trust me, the conferences may care about academic stature, but ESPN/FOX certainly don’t - and they have the checkbooks.

Yep, can’t miss that UVA/Vanderbilt game! Rigghht.

The PAC-12’s issue are generally due to horrible start times and largely apathetic fan bases. With every game available, to anyone, anywhere in the country, markets are irrelevant. People are going to watch what is most appealing, and regardless of the market, that will hardly ever be games involving UVA or UNC, unless they’re playing a top tier school, and that viewerships is usually carried by the fans of the top tier school.

If that’s true then Clemson would definitely be top 1 or 2 just based on the Greenville/ Upstate market alone.

I know at least three years ago it was the 2nd biggest CFB TV market in the nation

UNC and UVA should be targets for both the SEC and B1G because they add new geographical markets for TV and recruiting to both conferences.

I've said for some time the SEC doesn't need Clemson or FSU. The B1G might want them; maybe not.

Lastly, the statement "neither conference is wanting to expand" is a misleading semantic. If/when UNC and UVA are actually available, both conferences will suddenly want to expand by two more teams. Neither conference wants to risk a lawsuit by the ACC for enticing a school to break the GOR. They also won't help the schools financially. It's on the schools to extricate themselves first.

The courtship and decisions probably won't take long as the schools already know the pros and cons of both conferences.

IMO, both UNC and UVA would chose the B1G over the SEC for academic reasons. Remember, school presidents make the decisions, not ADs. I think the SEC might try to poach VaTech from the B12 as a response.

considered as an expansion candidate for the BIG or SEC? It must not, or North Carolina, or even more laughably, VIRGINIA, would never even be considered in the same breath as Clemson or FSU, much less be AHEAD of us.

This idea that putting North Carolina or Virginia into your conference "capturing" a new TV market is tenuous at best. The fans of those schools don't even travel well to see their teams on the road, certainly not to the extent that Clemson fans do. It's just another false narrative created by the Powers That Be, to justify their disinterest in actually adding teams which could complete with, and BEAT their existing conference members.

I say, if you are askeert of new competition, just come out and SAY you are askeert, don't try to hide behind some lame TV market excuse.

It actually doesn't. Why did the B1G tap Maryland for membership? They haven't exactly been tearing it up athletics-wise. The do have a piece of the DC TV market/viewership that the B1G didn't have covered. It's all about the ability to sell ads based on eyes on TVs statistics.

I worked in national brand sales once. The Gville/Sptbg/Anderson market did not get a lot of national, or even regional, ad buys b/c there wasn't enough viewership in those areas. Some of the manufacturers that have moved in there like BMW etc. have helped but it still doesn't compare to other markets.

For example:

DC is 9th
Tampa is 12th
Orlando is 16th
Miami is 18th
Charlotte is 21st
Raleigh-Durham is 22nd

Greenville-Spartanburg-Asheville-Anderson is 36th

Whoever picks up UNC will have a foot in the combined markets of Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham. That dwarfs Clemson which is primarily the Greenville-Spartanburg-Asheville-Anderson market. It's all about the ad revenue. It's antiquated but the ad buyers have yet to embrace out of market/area viewership numbers. If you look at Clemson just as a football brand, they ranked 10th in 2022. That's in the middle of the blue bloods of CFB. Pretty dang good. It's pretty volatile based on performance and getting those primetime games, though. For this season, they slipped to 23rd.

Neff and the board know they need a quality football product to push those viewership numbers to bolster future membership options. That's why they are signing off on these coaching contracts and pushing the collectives to pony up NIL money.

FWIW, outside of FSU and Clemson, no other ACC team ranked in the top 40 in 2022.

If a conference wants a football team that rarely wins, and no one watches at the small stadium or on TV, by all means UVA is the school to pursue.

UVA parlays all the equal distribution of ACC football money earned by Clemson into other sports. And they excel at non-football sports.

Maybe the $EC just wants some more bottom feeders to beat up on like the coots. That’s the only reason you take UNC and UVA. They have no football viewership unless they are being compared to non power 5 conferences.

I don’t disagree they are more desirable. It is about recruiting. SEc and BIG would get a recruiting advantage in VA and NC. Lots of recruits from both states. Adding UNC and UVa adds no challenge to the powers in football either.
