Elliott to Duke?

Dec 7, 2021, 9:13 AM

Go 6-6 for 4 yrs and then get dumped. What then, Arkansas St or So Miss and go 3-9 for 4 more yrs? I think I’d rather get paid less and win here.

So you would rather him win 9 games during the regular season because I don't see Clemson doing much better with an O.C. who strongly believes in the statement "We need to score more points"!
Look, what a lot of people are forgetting is that Tony was a co offensive coordinator on the two National Championship teams and even with Trevor Lawrence was the sole coordinator in the loss to Ohio State last year.
Just saying.

Thanks for the intelligent post deroberts, and your (thus far, futile) efforts to enlighten the dim-witted among TNet posters.

Keep it up!

de, you misspelled "maroon".

:)

I continue to be amazed by the sheer volume of little used scoks or long time silent "lurkers" who are showing up on the TNets posting right now. Apparently, not making the CFP this year meant open season on Clemson on this particular iteration of social media.

Wait, didn't TE have the rona last year?

Dec 7, 2021, 9:30 AM [ in reply to Re: Elliott to Duke? ]

How much will Duke pay? I can't imagine it being much more than he's making. If I were him, I would get a portal QB and some WR's and get some wins, and then bounce before things go south. You can't win long term at Duke.

Re: Wait, didn't TE have the rona last year?

Good question about Duke's pay scale.

Maybe T.Elliott believes that being a losing HC somewhere will position him for 'destination' jobs elsewhere. If he chooses to try this at Duke, well then good luck to him. He'll need lots of it.

As others in the business have reported, T.Elliott revealed his excellence as an O-Coordinator by making adjustments to the play calling regimen according to the strengths (and numerous weaknesses) of this year's Tiger football team.

Think about it ... LSU's 2019 championship team made the ignorant fans think that the BigZero ... uh, er, I mean the BigO and his staff look like geniuses. Then Joe SuperStar QB departs for the NFL and LSU (despite their still powerful O-Line and stud RBs) and LSU doesn't adjust and turns to dust. The LSU situation is an example of inadequate coaching. J

Just sayin'

Elliot missed the Ohio State game last year due to covid.

Does Streeter get a pass on that game since he didn't have much time to prepare, and it wasn't really his playbook/offense/etc?

Didn't we throw for 400 yards in that game?

Also this happened while not being able to block anybody in the OSU front 7.

Good points. I tend to forget the details when we get blown out, but other than 3 consecutive 3/4 & outs in the second quarter, the offense played pretty well.

Coaches don't get fired for going to a bowl every season at Duke.

With that said, I think taking the HC job at Duke is a sign that he is personally ready to move into a new role and likes the idea of coaching in a power 5 conference.

He didn't get near the traction this season as he has previously and he is attempting to take the best job offered.

I think it's a mistake on his part for many reasons, but if he is ready to move on then I am happy that he is taking an opportunity instead of sticking around Clemson and looking over the fence.

Duke is a tough gig and it always has been...

Dec 7, 2021, 9:37 AM

They've had one ten-win season in school history and only five nine-win seasons and four of those date back to Wallace Wade in the 1930's and 40's.

Their last four coaches before Cutcliffe (Barry Wilson, Fred Goldsmith, Carl Franks and Ted Roof) were all terrible. Spurrier had some limited success largely due to his unique "Air Ball" offense while pretty much every other team in the country was still running the option, but he was only there as HC for three seasons.

In the last fifteen seasons, Cutcliffe brought some stability and made Duke somewhat competitive. It took him a while to get there but in the last nine seasons he's has one 10-win season, one 9-win season and two 8-win seasons which is historically well above average for them.

At the end of the day, it's still Duke and it's going to be a tough row to hoe for somebody especially someone with no prior head coaching experience.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

6-6 every year would be good at Duke

Dec 7, 2021, 9:50 AM

I dont think that's getting anyone fired in 4 years.

Cutcliffe was 5-18 over the last two seasons and it seemed like it was just time to move on for both parties.

Can I help pay for Elliotts bus ticket to Durham. I think the $1 bus goes that way.

Dec 7, 2021, 11:21 AM

No way would he get fired for going 6-6 at Duke for 4 straight seasons. In fact, that would probably get him looked at for bigger HC opportunities.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

6-6 at duke in 4 seasons

Dec 7, 2021, 12:52 PM

would get him a massive raise when another bigger school came calling

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Duke is a stepping stone. If he's mildly successful there

Dec 7, 2021, 12:53 PM

Bigger schools will come calling.
