although I could have told you that with Republicans in charge, the first thing to suffer would be higher education. Under the circumstances, he's done a remarkable job.

but with Mark Sanford and Nikki Haley (not to mention their narrow-minded buddies in the Legislature) running SC for the better part of the last decade, higher education has ceased to be important because "the money isn't there".

he didn't "cheat" any more than any "coach" does in the coaches' football poll. And he isn't handicapping football, times have changed with regards to academics and scholarship numbers since you were at Clemson. There was no APR in the 1980s and no 85 scholarship limit. Whether you want to admit it or not, those two factors fundamentally changed college football. Get over it.

known for excellence and innovation in academics. Quite a feat when you consider the massive, massive budget cuts he's dealt with from the state. Hats off to the man.

Far too many of President Barker's initiatives lack substance and are mere facades.

since they have been there I have seen very real change and also change since I graduated, including:
* A much more beautiful campus and town. Most of us have always thought it was beautiful but everything is better from tree maintenance to new construction to stop lights and light posts.
* ICAR
* Writing across the curriculum. I do a lot of hiring and can tell a Clemson person from a USuC graduate usually from their writing alone.
* Maintaining a fairly low increase in enrollment, esp considering the pressure to increase enrollment from reduced state funding.
* Increased emphasis on faculty teaching. I remember a day when no one cared that your professor was a terrible teacher (or person) as long as he did enough research.
