Economics

Apr 12, 2016, 6:01 PM

As a Clemson 1984 business school grad, this decision with the students is simple economics, supply and demand. Clemson has continued to improve the product on the field through the Dabo era hopefully culminating in a Natl Championship compliments of the great Deshaun Watson - the best all-time player in any sport in Clemson history. So tickets are in demand and at a premium. The athletic dept is spending money on facilities to grow the product of Clemson Football and needs more revenue.

Dabo, Deshaun, BV and our OC's continue to recruit through the roof. I include Deshaun because his skill sets are not the icing on the cake, but the lynch-pin of the whole operation. Only a QB can pull it all together on the field. And this will hopefully be one he11uva run surpassing the Ford era with multiple natl championships. Then, lets hope in the distant future, Clemson football will take some hits and decline for a few years. Some fans will not be as motivated to attend. Attendance will drop. Students will be less motivated to watch the game from the upper deck. Then the AD will drop prices down a bit commensurate with the market to incentivize attendance. It's a predictable cycle that will annoy some folks but not diminish Clemson's traditions and greatness. Go Tigers!

Make an economic assessment sure, just don't totally forget to account for the "value" created in generating lifelong and passionate fans out of students when you complete your calculus.

That is the opportunity cost ... today's kids will not have the same experience we did back in the 80's.

Did ticket prices drop during the lean years with Hatfield or West? I think in general we keep them the same and just have more empty seats.
