DW4 had a brilliant 1st drive vs. UGA,

Sep 6, 2022, 12:57 PM

and we all wondered how long it would be until he was the guy.
(We lost that game - not because Stoudt was bad, but mainly because UGA’s running game was strong and we were down a starting DE)

Next was FSU, and it could not have been clearer: Stoudt threw into the dirt essentially the same pass CK2 scored on last night, and the same one DW4 threw to HR13 to win a natty. So on came Watson and the rest is history.
(Lots of coaching and mental mistakes in that game, but if DW4 is the starter we might’ve won it)

Will we have a game this season like that 2014 FSU game, and if so will CK2 be able to bail us out?

If CK2 emerges as the starter, will we see:
A) DJ accepts it, offers full support, and gets a fair amount of PT;
B) DJ enters the portal a la KB2; or
C) DJ fades into obscurity and isn’t dialed in a la Stoudt (vs. GT when Watson went down)?

Perhaps ND or Miami is that game.

From my seat last night, with full hopes DJ was a new man, I was instantly disappointed. From his mechanics to his body language, he does not look or feel like a confident leader of this team. Rather, he seems more like a fragile work in progress, and the coaches seem to holding their breath and rolling the dice hoping he can (get and) stay ahead of CK2. Maybe DJ takes it better than both Stoudt and Bryant did, but one way or another the time is coming.

To me the important question is: will this be a repeat of the 2014 season, when possibly our best ever defense missed the CFP because we were too slow to pull the trigger?

One thing to note is the difference in playcalling...

You reference the DW4 to HR13 rub rout. Interesting that they call it with CK2 with 3rd stringers, but not on 1st and 5 heading into the endzone.

DJU5 can't throw the ball with enough "touch" or accuracy to make "Orange Crush" effective. The receiver would have no idea which side the ball was coming on, and it would be thrown so hard (from 6 yards away) that the receiver wouldn't be able to react. Contrast that with Cade's throw-- the receiver knew where the ball was coming, and it gently dropped into his arms. That's why CK2 is so much like DW4.

Re: DW4 had a brilliant 1st drive vs. UGA,

I can't really say we missed the playoffs in 2014 due to not starting Watson right away. It would've been a tall task for a true freshman to win at Georgia in their very first start IMO. Watson also took over against FSU in the 1st quarter with us down 3-0. We led that game 10-3 at the half, and 17-10 later on in the 4th quarter so it's not as if we were in a huge hole created by Stoudt that we just weren't able to crawl out of. We had chances to win that game including having the ball inside the FSU 20 with under 2 minutes left in a tie game following an FSU turnover, and we ended up turning the ball over ourselves.

We also had the bad snap in the 3rd quarter that turned a 2nd and goal from the 1 into a 3rd and goal from the 24. We ended up missing a FG after that which gave us 2 missed FGs on the night. Then in overtime we turned the ball over on downs. I think at that point our team still had a lot of growing up to do beyond the QB position. Remember we in large part had that chance against FSU due to Winston being suspended.

All that isn't even to mention Watson getting hurt against Louisville and missing the next 3 games and then getting hurt against GT which led to a lose in that game.

Fair points, and we’ll never know how it might’ve turned out. I just hope history is a guide. No need to repeat it.

It's not a decision I envy the coaching staff for. It's easy for us fans to sit back and say we'd start Cade or whatever. The drive last night looked great, but I'm sure he has his own issues the coaches would like to see him improve on as well. I'm sure Dabo doesn't want a situation where he has to go back and forth over which QB is the starter so I'd imagine he won't go with Cade until he feels there is no going back(aside from an injury of course) so I can only imagine he has certain things he wants to see(or perhaps not see in terms of DJ) before doing that.

interesting that DJ came up with this year’s phrase “Roll the dice.”

Sep 6, 2022, 2:03 PM

He may be trying to tell the coaches to roll the dice and take a chance with Cade because he knows he can’t do it. Let’s listen to this young man’s quiet cry for rescue.
