Parking In Athens
Jul 15, 2014, 5:54 PM

What are the best parking options in Athens?
Preferably in the vicinity of fellow Clemson fans.
This is my first and last trip to Athens as a visiting fan so I hope to survive.
Any help is much appreciated.

I'm willing to consider any and all options so this is under consideration.
The only concern then is leaving after the game.

where ever you opt to park, be observant and cautious walking through the hordes of dawg fans to the stadium....a late afternoon kickoff will give them more time to imbibe and they're not known as the most hospitable folks under the best of circumstances.
I no longer even consider attending games there.

They are a very nasty fanbase and aren't above starting fights or damaging cars with opponent logos.
Beware.

I've heard that. Hence the reason I'm making this a one time trip. I doubt we play in Athens again for a long time any way.

UGA has the worst fans in the south. Been there many times only NC State or Maryland fans come close.

Been to NC State and South Carolina and never had an incident. Never had the privilege of attending a game at Maryland not that I'm disappointed about that. I'll be curious to see how this "stacks up."

Can't even remember where we parked, just want to forget ever going. That place and Willy B are the WORST game day experiences, esp late afternoon / night games (whether they win or lose the game)..never again...

I've never had any trouble in Columbia. I just don't engage the drunk rednecks. Let them talk to themselves and when they realize they aren't getting under your skin they move on to another lucky person.

Park in one of the downtown decks. Get there early.
Jul 15, 2014, 7:44 PM

Not a long walk to the stadium. Traffic won't be a problem because the THUGA fans will be gone in the 3rd quarter.
Keep a keen eye out for drunk pedestrians, however. There will be lots of them.

The only thing that would suffer due to parking in a deck is tailgating. If there is an open air parking area free of drunken Georgia rednecks that would be ideal, but that may be asking for too much.

Tailgate in their intramural fields south of campus...
Jul 15, 2014, 8:38 PM

They run buses to the stadium.
Can't help you on the drunken Georgia rednecks, however. They are everywhere. They make the coot fans look like intelligent Southern gentlemen by comparison.
Just look at their sad fat redneck faces after the game and be thankful we are Clemson Tigers.

if we are gone by the 3rd qter we'll be waiting for you whenever you exit the stadium. don't display any orange on your cars and swap license plates if possible.....better still.....drive the junker.

I injected a little sarcasm there. I've been to dead valley and you can blow smoke up someone else's ####.....there are jerks in every fan base. I can almost assure you, act civil and you'll enjoy one of college football's greatest atmospheres.

yep if you can dodge flying liquor bottles and make it past fraternity row on your way back to your car you may come away unscathed.

Park in East Campus and take shuttle to the game.
Jul 15, 2014, 11:23 PM

Parking is very difficult around Athens. Their fans are enthusiastic. They are not as classless and USuC fans. They are DAWGS: Treat them with respect and they will treat you with respect.
USuC fans are chickens: they are arrogant when they win and cowards when they lose.

Sounds like a plan. I appreciate the helpful reply and don't anticipate any incidents just hoping to avoid the worst of the worst.

Tough request with being on campus with very few large parking lots ... most of those require permits.
Just like any school - avoid lots with tons of drunk students. They are usually harmless unless confronted. Anyone with too much to drink never reacts reasonability when confronted.
Everyone has a nightmare story from an away game. My was at SC back in the late 80's. Couldn't get back to my car with a group trying to pick a fight. They finally realized I would not be any fun, because I would just lay there ...

You've got a couple of options
Jul 16, 2014, 12:05 PM
|
|
You can park downtown in various places, usually $20 for a spot. The walk to the stadium isn't bad, and you're already close to bars/restaurants for when the game ends.
You can also park in the lots off of College Station road. There are plenty of spots and they run a shuttle, and it's free if I remember right. There are plenty of buses going back and forth, and I'm sure there will be a contingent of Clemson fans there.

Thank for the heads up. Sounds like there are some good options, it's just a matter of picking the right spot that is free of a lot of drunk fans.
