but one reason I like Terrence Malick is for his philosophical themes. He studied at Harvard and Oxford under some pretty famous philosophers, and was studying for his doctorate in philosophy at Oxford before a disagreement with Gilbert Ryle over his dissertation sent him home without a degree. He's even had one of his translations of Heidegger published by a major academic press.

I think on that level, I can see the appeal for you. He basically makes very "personal" movies that usually only speak to him (and a few others).
But I can understand the disdain for that type of movie making. It's like an inside joke, if you aren't on the inside they come off as annoying.

I can sort of see that, but I think it's a function of the influence of Heidegger on his work (very briefly: Heidegger thinks that truth is an uncovering of the world by the world, so that we're really, authentically, seeing the phenomena instead of having them interpreted through some sort of concept. So Malick is at the extreme side of 'show, don't tell,' and what he shows isn't always all that clear, either). On the one hand, that means that I think people aren't getting what he's doing because they might be trying a little too hard to find objective narrative structure, but on the other hand the fact that what he's doing isn't all that apparent to a lot of people might be a critique of that kind of philosophy. Anyway, while his stuff doesn't have the widest of appeal, a lot of people do seem to like and get what he's doing (Roger Ebert said "Tree of Life" was one of the best movies ever made), so the whole project probably shouldn't be scrapped.

don't be shocked when the majority detest his movies for the very reasons you gave for liking his movies.
Visually, his movies are worth seeing alone, even if his version of "story" isn't traditional.
Seeing as you love Malick because of his philosophical background, what are your thoughts on Aronofsky? He's another Harvard guy who loves himself some subtext.

but not quite as much as Malick. Aronofsky is a film school guy, whereas Malick is basically a philosophy professor who makes movies. I guess that's the difference. Also, Malick's movies have lots of Christian themes that you won't find in Aronofsky.

it was called "The Ghost and the Darkness" with Michael Douglas and Val Kilmer. They were hunting lions out in Africa somewhere. It made absolutely no sense.
*note: I did not count "B" movies and junk I have seen on SyFy like "Sharknado". I only count films that Hollywood actually gave an effort.

Critically acclaimed, a serious movie from Adam Sandler. Signs were pointing to omgwtfbbq level of bad.
This was the wife and I while we watched it:
Once we finally decided "maybe we should just turn this off..." there was only 10 minutes left and we decided to not be quitters.
