Opening a can of worms RE the Tight End position

For several years now I’ve heard and read how the tight end position is under-utilized and underachieving for our Tigers. Admittedly, we were spoiled during the Dwayne Allen and Jordan Leggett years.
But I did a quick search of total receiving yards and yards per game and found some interesting results…
In total receiving yards, there are exactly two Tight Ends in the top 50, the first checking in at number 23.
In receptions per game, there are exactly 4 tight ends in the top 50.
So is great tight end play a necessity or a luxury?
When we were 15-0 in 2018 and beating the brakes off of everyone with a freshman quarterback, we didn’t have a standout tight end and it didn’t seem to hurt us much.
Look, I’d love for us to have Tony Gonzalez lining up for us every year, don’t get me wrong. But sometimes it seems as if EVERYONE except Clemson has a TE with 5+ catches per game when that’s not reality.
What am I missing here?
TIA in advance for your thoughtful responses ????

Your jumping to collusions. I'd take those numbers with a grade of slaw until we have interdependent vertification.

You are correct about 2018....we didn't really need great tight end play. Trevor, Travis, Amari, Tee, and Justyn did it all for us. But these last couple of years it would have been nice to have the option of using tight ends more when the other positions were not producing as much. But, I liked what I saw from Davis Allen and even Jake Briningstool in a few games in the second half of the season. It would not surprise me to see these two more in the mix in '22.

If you have really good WR you can get by with an occasional pass to a TE. If you have suspect WR like we do, a good TE game would really help.

Interesting question and more interesting stats. I believe with TE it’s not the # of catches or total yards that matter it’s the different kind of threat a good one presents. The studs on display in this year Natty were both examples of big imposing hard to cover hard to bring down threats that create another hard to defend dimension for the Defense. Every team needs a wrecking ball to create some chaos once in awhile.

tight end, especially in the corner of the endzone high enough where only the T.E. can get it. I saw it once to Allen for the TD. I thought Streeter would bring it back to the bowl gmme, but none of that very safe throw. I would send both tall tight ends to each corner, and QB throws to one that is least guard. Davos Allen is 6 five with good hands, while Briningstool is 6 ft. 6 with supposedly even better hands.
