Do we run more play action and less RPO this year?

Please correct me if my terminology is wrong, but can we really run an effective RPO game with our lack of depth at QB? The RPO game is limited when the defense knows the QB is not going to run the ball much if at all. With our stable of backs including some large ones and our depth at wide receiver and tight end, we should be able to spread people out, make them put in another db and make them tackle our big running backs in a play action running and passing game. Don't need DJ taking unnecessary shots in the running game.
Tempo? We now have the depth at every position (but QB) to tempo people and wear them down.
Practice is right around the corner.

sets...then yes. A little more balance to keep the LB's and DE's quite honest...as well as the Safetys supporting the run.

That’s a good qwestion. I know in the past with QB depth issues Dabo has said “we run the QB…a lot…that’s what we do.”
But also our offense scheme has to develop and evolve as well to keep opposing DCs guessing.
Man it’s going to be a fun exciting new year for Clemson Football

My guess (and it's only a guess) is that it depends on the success of the OL. If they can get good push and open holes, then we should be able to back off on the amount of RPOs we run.
The second question is how well the TEs can block. If they can lead block at the point-of-attack, we should be able to reduce dependence on RPOs.
The third question is the passing game. If we can keep opposing defenses honest, then a short passing game should allow the running game to move the ball.
If we have improvement in all three areas, then we should be able to do well enough with the RBs so that we don't need the extra blocker provided with the RPOs.

I've been begging for a 3-TE offense for a while....

Maybe with the improved TE room and a decent OL, this is the year to try it. If successful, it would certainly reduce the need for many RPOs and give us a real smash-mouth run/pass option game with the QB protected by not having to be the ball carrier.

In case we have trouble running the ball, that's why.

The "R" in RPO does not mean "quarterback run". It means the quarterback has the option to hand off or throw. We won't run less RPO because of depth, but we might run less RPO because DJU won't yet have the experience of a 3-year starter in Trevor.

Maybe not in line with the thread, but I believe -- -- DJ will run the ball if the play breaks down and he sees a line. That is just who he is. He was a good runner in high school as he was bigger than most and could go over some. He likes to run and is good at it. -- Fewer QB runs will be called. -- Fewer RPO will be called. -- When the best chance of moving the chain or scoring is with DJ running, Dabo/Elliot will do that. DJ is not fragile. In that ND game he was already injured.

Great question. We have been unable to consistently run the ball even with a great back unless the QB run is in the mix. However if DJ gets hurt we are done so it’s a potential problem!

One thing most younger guys might not remember is what a tough, durable runner Tajh Boyd was. Dabo used him and will use DJ.
He lacked the elusive gift of a Dantzler and and some others -- so ran tough. His yardage was gained with short/tough runs, and he did a lot of those. In close games (like LSU) Dabo would call his number over and over. He ran tough yards against OHS. He was our Teebow type hero. Not many are as durable as Boyd.

Dabo is not going to take anything off the table. If it is obvious that we need the QB to be a part of the running game then he is going to run DJ. If we don't need him as much then he won't, but we won't let being afraid of getting him hurt dictate our style of play. Of course, we do what we can to keep him healthy, but that only goes so far.
