Clemson when "Tree" and his crowd came in.
I also got to see who I consider one of, if not the greatest college player of all time live back then. No, he didn't play for Clemson. He was one David "Skywalker" Thompson, of NC State. He could flat leap over tall buildings (and players) in a single bound.

Skip Wise was first team All-ACC his freshman (only) year. Phil Ford, also a freshman that year, was not.

Agree that Wise was the most talented player in Clemson bb history. He schooled Phil Ford when he played against him.. Left school for ABA after freshman year. Woulda/ coulda/ shoulda been our best ever.

That Grant three pointer

Seeing a 6-10 guy hit a three pointer seems normal these days. That shot against Virginia was totally out of the blue and I believe was the game winner. Pretty sure it was Horace's only three point basket during his Clemson career. It set off a huge celebration in my household.

Problem was, he was stupid. His freshman and only season, he made Phil Ford look like nothing.

That makes this a very tricky question.
So...I’m gonna go with Larry Shyitt.

Larry Nance,Tree, Buckner and Billy Williams have to be considered. The ACC in the 70s and 80s was filled with future NBA HOF. I was fortunate enough to see Len Bias, Jordan, Worthy, Phil Ford, Sampson, and many other greats at Littlejohn. Still nothing like the night we beat Duke and Giminski! All time starting 5 is pg skip wise sg billy Williams, c Tree, sf Nance and PF Ho Grant. Beat player I ever saw play at Little John was Len Bias by far. He was utterly unreal

Excellent posts by everyone. I'm can't come up with a 1, or even a top 5 without leaving someone off as it's so hard to compare eras. However, you can't have any list without Tree or Skip Wise. My top game all time at Clemson, is easy it was the night Skip took down Phil Ford.

Beating Duke with Giminski is right there. I believe Duke was #1 at the time. Loudest I ever heard LJ. We also beat Sampson’s UVA and I believe a Jordan, Worthy, Perkins UNC back in the day.

Do people not realize how great Skip Wise was?
Feb 23, 2021, 11:34 PM
|
|
He was far and away the best since I've been watching Clemson basketball (late 1960s). Think Michael Jordan/Kobe Bryant good. I loved Horace Grant and Trevor Booker and Greg Buckner, but Wise was just on a different level. Not the typical Clemson great, i.e. raw talent that has to be developed or surprises everybody as he grows into a great player, but rather a straight-up baller from the streets that could shoot and score with the best, right from the get-go. What a tragedy the way it turned out for him.

Based on one year hands down Skip Wise! He was the best raw talent ever to play in a Tiger uniform. Thinking he was 1st team all ACC back before the young talent was even a factor. Sad story though! Go Tigers!

Apologies. I meant to say Boogie deserves "more" consideration (he is, after all mentioned in the article/video). Highest single season offensive win shares (1998-1999) in the history of the program.
