You have a specific need for a position player and are unsure of the development of the present guys then use the portal in those rare occasions. I think this is the way coach Swinney looks at it and I totally agree. IF Dabo feels like there isn’t a quality player to fill the defensive end spot then he likely will find one in the portal.
When a coach turns to the portal he is admitting that his recruiting and development isn’t good. Dabo ain’t gonna do that!!!! I don’t think that he has to.

Yep a lot of ways to look at the portal. So what he means is Dabo is going to be loyal and not pay the $ to bring in someone to take away a position from a guy that is committed to the program.
Like I said before the high school kids are going to be the biggest loser in this portal deal.

How exactly are HS kids losing? The number of scholarships is fixed. All scholarships are filled. A number of portal guys are not picked up by another team which means more guys are offered out of HS

Actually, extensive use of the portal could mean that "developmental players" are even more likely to end up at mid-tier or lower-tiers schools and then they enter the portal when they are a junior or senior to play for a major team.
And so, it hurts HS players by taking away their opportunities to play for a major team as a freshman. Likewise, if you're a major school, when recruiting, why recruit a developmental player, when you can just pick up the same developmental players in two or three years from the portal?

Not yet but this is a fairly new system that coaches haven’t been able to negatively recruit with. Now that multiple programs have consistently used the portal a great deal you better believe Dabo, & other coaches sharing the same philosophy, will use it to negatively recruit. Should be interesting to see how it plays out

Can you show me where I said they were? Just because I said coaches will begin to use the portal to negatively recruit against FSU type teams doesn’t mean I expect them to fall out of the top 20 in recruiting lol
I will say however that it will begin helping us with individual recruits because we can negatively recruit against the upper echelons while positively recruit to our culture making us the more unique option.

Thats all the proof we need that the transfer portal is a complete failure. We’re also gonna ignore the fact that all 4 playoff teams had significant upgrades from the portal. We are TigerNet. We are too smart to use logic. The transfer portal has hurt our feelings to we have to fight it.

I think Dabo is playing the long game and hoping that the portal looks very enticing, but in the long run it hurts. Hoping that high school kids see that we value loyalty and don't encourage the program-jumping. Will it work? If so, Dabo will look like a genius when the hoopla dies down.

Hypothetically , if it were feasible that a gradual increase in usage of the portal slowly but surely would eroded said culture , doesn't it make sense that Dabo doesn't wish to destroy that which he worked so feverishly to build ?

Which means all recruits are hearing it. So, we may not know which recruits commit to Clemson for which that was an influencing factor. The fact that he said it stood out to him means he has noticed it as a differentiating factor from other school.

This season will be interesting to watch how well blue bloods like Bama and OSU can assemble a new team via the portal. Last season the example was Colorado extensively revamping the roster, but Sanders was starting from a empty cupboard and we saw the poor results. If Bama, FSU, OSU, etc can add 20-30 transfer players and play at an elite level then I don’t see the NIL/TP chaos calming down anytime soon.
