postseason. Win and we are in the playoff. Lose and UVA is off to the Orange Bowl as the ACC Champs. Clemson likely won't make the top 4 without an ACC Championship. So we could potentially be heading to....Wait for it...The Camping World Bowl (Formerly Russel Athletic Bowl) in Orlando.
The Rose Bowl will take Pac12 and Big10. The Sugar will take the SEC and Big12. Orange has UVA. Peach and Fiesta are playoff bowls. That leaves the Cotton to pick between Clemson and the Big12 runner up (Baylor or Oklahoma). The Cotton Bowl opponent would likely be Memphis. Big game this weekend.

Does the OB not get the highest ranked ACC team? UVA wouldn't jump us if they were to win the ACCCG.

The Orange Bowl seems to have removed "champion"

It doesn't specify "champion" on the Orange Bowl official site: http://www.orangebowl.org/thegame/info/faq/
WHAT CONFERENCES ARE ASSOCIATED WITH THE CAPITAL ONE ORANGE BOWL GAME? The Capital One Orange Bowl will host the ACC versus the highest ranked available team, from the B1G, SEC, or Notre Dame.
When the Capital One Orange Bowl hosts a College Football Playoff Semifinal we will host either the 1st ranked team vs. 4th ranked team or the 2nd ranked team vs. the 3rd ranked team in the final CFP rankings.
"Champion" has also been removed from the Orange Bowl tweet about the game:

To answer my own question, the answer is the ACC Champ gets an automatic bid to the OB unless they make the CFP. In that case, the next highest ranked ACC team is selected. If no other ACC team is ranked, then the OB can select any bowl eligible team from the ACC. In that event, I'd take FSU assuming they have a new coach in place by then who could generate some excitement in the fanbase and sell some tickets.

nah. we would get picked up as a second acc team in a ny6 bowl, at the least. same thing happened with virginia tech that one year when we went off to the orange and they went to the sugar.

It may actually be the Citrus Bowl per ACC– Citrus Bowl (if top possible team is higher-ranked than SEC or Big Ten team) vs. SEC or Big Ten
Bigger question would be if we lose , which players skip the the bowl.
But let’s leave no doubt and win Saturday.

There will not be a non-conference champion in the CFP.
If LSU loses, they are done. If OSU loses, they are done. If Clemson loses, we are done.
And if all three of the above lose, my bookie will own my house.

almost assuredly put the big 12 winner in playoff. The 2nd place would go to Sugar. We'd end up in Cotton (most likely). Although, frankly, I'd rather go to camping world bowl than play Memphis.

That is possible but if Utah beats Oregon it will be Utah instead of the Big 12 Champ

The Cotton would almost certainly want a 1-loss Clemson team over any of their other possibilities to play against Memphis/Idaho State/App State. IF (and its a BIG if)... we were to lose to Virginia and not make the playoff, then you've got to assume that Big 10 Champ, SEC Champ, and two out of three of Big 12 Champ, Pac 12 Champ, and SEC Runner-Up are all in the playoffs. The next available team from all of those leagues goes to their conference affiliated bowl... so the matchups look like this
Lets Assume Playoff is: Ohio State LSU Utah OK/Baylor
Rose: Probably Oregon vs. Penn State Sugar: Probably Georgia vs. Oklahoma/Baylor loser Orange: Probably Virginia vs. Florida Cotton: Probably Memphis/Idaho State/App State vs. Clemson
If UGA beats LSU and Clemson loses:
Playoff: Ohio State Georgia Utah OK/Baylor/LSU
Then only change is LSU or Florida in Sugar, potentially Minnesota to Orange
If Clemson AND Utah lose, Georgia Wins: Playoff: Ohio State Georgia OK/Baylor LSU
Florida to Sugar, Minnesota to Orange Clemson still in Cotton
If Clemson AND Ohio State lose, LSU and Utah Win Playoff: LSU Utah OK/Baylor Ohio State
No real changes to other bowls compared to above scenario with same teams in different order.
If Clemson, Ohio State, AND LSU lose, Utah wins
Playoff: Georgia Utah Oklahoma/Baylor Ohio State
LSU instead of Georgia in Sugar, otherwise the same. Clemson still in Cotton.
If Clemson AND Utah lose, LSU Wins: Playoff: Ohio State LSU OK/Baylor Clemson - yes, I think we still get in in this situation over 2-loss Oregon, 2-loss Utah, 2-loss Florida, and 2-loss Georgia (Oregon is the only one that would be close)
If Clemson, Ohio State, and Utah all lose, LSU Wins Playoff: LSU OK/Baylor Ohio State Clemson
If Clemson, Ohio State, Utah, and LSU all lose: Hades Freezes Over. I mean...
Playoff: Georgia OK/Baylor LSU Ohio State
Clemson to Cotton yet again.
SOOOOOO... in the unlikely event that Clemson loses to Virginia, I believe we are headed to the Cotton Bowl vs. Memphis/Idaho State/App State. UNLESS LSU and Oregon both win, which gives us a shot at the 4 seed even with a loss.
Why I just spent 30 minutes going through scenarios that involved Clemson losing, I'm not sure. Because the likelihood of that in itself is low. Beat the Hoos from Hooville!
