Physical Shatley embracing move to OL
Junior right tackle Tyler Shatley was moved to right tackle in the spring, partly because of his physical nature. That move was just fine with Shatley, who can take out his agression on unsuspecting defensive linemen and linebackers. Full Story » |

I'm not calling him out...and maybe this says something about our DL...but he's gotten push around pretty good in a few of the 1-on-1 videos they've posted.

Yes. But what difference does that make?
I posted a Tyler Shatley-related video observation on a Tyler Shatley-related thread.
What's the problem?
Did you even watch the video I'm referring to?

You're making your determination based on a couple of plays in a practice video? I'll believe what the coaches say about him

I like to use my eyes.
The coaches also thought Antoine McClain was the best fit for the position. My eyes told me otherwise.
I'm sure Shatley will turn out fine. I was just making an observation.
Excuse me if I'm not particularly excited about our o-line, given our track record over the past decade and the fact that we're having to bring DT's over to play guard.

Remember that most of the protections, especially with the pass blocking, the OL can't over extend. He has to step back and keep himself between the DL and the QB. That involves a lot of balance, footwork and reaction to quick changes in direction by the DL, LB, etc. Also, 1 on 1 blocking is very different than when a play is actually being run in a game situation. Not saying Tyler will be great, but these drills don't tell the whole story.

Good point there at the end...

DL have gaps that they're supposed to control and rush in a game situation. If they lose gap integrity, they lose the play. In a game, there are other linemen flanking them on both sides of the ball, where in a 1-on-1 drill, they can fly all over the place to try and get by the linemen. Essentially, this makes 1-on-1 drills extremely more difficult for the OL than a game situation.

My point, exactly. 1 on 1 drills help with footwork and improving quickness, etc., but when the crowd is there with all the lines mingled, it is easier for the OL to neutralize a DL.

I don't disagree...you have a good point.
It just appears that BT and Kalon are holding up in the 1 on 1's a bit better...based on a very small amount of footage, obviously.

I am glad we are moving some D guys to the O line

Generally, D guys are aggressive and some say more "athletic"?. For example, Guards need to pull and its a good thing if they are relatively fast. When you do the "student body left" and "student body right" plays aka "sweeps", its the guards that pull and lead the gallant charge.... I am really looking forward to the Atlanta game, and see this personally. Problem is, everybody in my family wants to go to the game, and we are now talking big bucks..... I digress.....

I was generally pleased with the guards. The tackles were getting beaten pretty badly but the guards were holding their own for the most part
