I remember all too well in 2008 when the balance of my 401K lost over 60% of it's value.
Guess what, today it has gained all of that value back plus another 25%.
So yes, I think it's better now than 4 years ago.

pressure to lower interest rates, which devalued the dollar. The dollar has been in steady decline for almost 20 years.
People forget that Reagan inherited a much worse economy than Obama, yet Reagan's policies created a 20 year economic boom. Supply side/trickle down economics do work. What doesn't work is Keynesian economics and big government.
Reagan's policies turned things around and when the economy finally started to slow, which happens because economies are like weather and are cyclical, Clinton, via Greenspan and the Fed, became way to interventionist. Those policies, along with Clinton's social engineering policies pushing minority home ownership, are what lead to the huge housing and banking crisis we are still trying to recover from.
The economy will always be cyclical. Government intervention only makes it worse because it pushes "down cycles" down the road, which ends up making them worse. Such that when they do happen, they are much deeper and last longer. Throw in social engineering policies tied to the economy and you create a crisis in the making. This is exactly what Clinton did, and we're living with the results now.

It is going to be real interresting to see what happens with the EPA and jobs. My buddy is having to shut down two of his offices cutting 28(to get under 50) full time positions. He will be offering some of his employees part-time work but is unable to do anything else. Some of them have been working for him for over 15 years. We need to just remember, real people and families are going to be suffering even more real soon.

But it is very possible that he made some bad business decisions, or his services or products are seeing lessened demand, and he failed to adapt. As a small business owner, I understand that you have to make good decisions quickly, and adapt just as fast to survive.
In other words, your buddy may just be failing. It happens. Businesses go under even in the best of times.
