Whoops. DeSantis costs Florida $1 billion in lost economic development, and I'm guess this is just the start.
In March, Disney called Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida “anti-business” for his scorched-earth attempt to tighten oversight of the company’s theme park resort near Orlando. Last month, when Disney sued the governor and his allies for what it called “a targeted campaign of government retaliation,” the company made clear that $17 billion in planned investment in Walt Disney World was on the line.
“Does the state want us to invest more, employ more people, and pay more taxes, or not?” Robert A. Iger, Disney’s chief executive, said on an earnings-related conference call with analysts last week.
On Thursday, Mr. Iger and Josh D’Amaro, Disney’s theme park and consumer products chairman, showed that they were not bluffing, pulling the plug on a nearly $1 billion office complex that was scheduled for construction in Orlando. It would have brought more than 2,000 jobs to the region, with $120,000 as the average salary, according to an estimate from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.

Being more or less the front runner for the Republican nomination for awhile now, he's been target #1 for media propaganda so far. Which frankly might work out if someone else can fly under the radar and scoop up the Pub nomination before our Goebbels-esque media can adjust.

withstood Christian Right boycotts. Right Snowflakes may not think much about switching pisswater beers because they're triggered, but much harder thing to tell your kids "No more Disney+ and we're not going to Disney world because we're taking a stand!"
Whatever economic turbulence Disney is suffering, it is most certainly not because of some "culture war" fight.

in subscribers, I guess we'll see. I think many of you underestimate the amount of 'fed up' that's in the air just because you don't necessarily care.
Not to mention, with household debt skyrocketing those trips to Disney World may not be financially feasible anymore, so it may not all be culture war related, but they're not exactly in a position of strength either.

immune? Like I said, Disney+ has lost subscribers for 2 quarters in a row now.
I'd also add they're probably more susceptible to a boycott than they ever have been before, lots of competition for children's content out there now. When I was growing up you were more or less confined to Disney movies/shows, that's not the case now.

You don’t think parents can tell their kids “no Disney?” Parents who act like parents will have no trouble doing so.

Sadly, there are plenty of good parents who are still not aware of Disney Corp’s role as a social driver in the sexualizing of children.
This is especially true for dual income families.
The kids want to go to Disney, and the parents say ‘why not’?
Same situation with public schools, except that the schools have far more ‘touch points’ than Disney to bring the schools’ groomer activities to the parents’ attention.

Lakebum1® wins the ‘smart post’ award for this Disney / DeSantis thread.
Office parks are not a very good development investment at this time.
Disney can pompously posture that their decision to pull the plug on their $1B office complex is because of Big Bad DeSantis.
B.S.
Disney realizes this project is not smart for now, and therefore the prudent business decision is to delay it.
DeSantis is their straw man.
Disclaimer: I’m not a huge DeSantis supporter.

pulling the plug on a nearly $1 billion office complex that was scheduled for construction in Orlando.
I can't read the article. Does it say where they are moving it to, or are they shelving it? Because there is a difference.

$1B office complex? Disney is struggling as it is, there's no way they were seriously considering spending that kind of coin for office space.
It's posturing, just like Desantis is doing.

With CA being such a business-unfriendly state, let’s see if Disney is using their very recently announced plan to expand at their historical Anaheim site (I.e., Disneyland Forward) turns out to be anything like what they had wanted to do in Orlando.
I think that this is a (relatively cheap … from Disney’s perspective) bluff.
(*). Disney’s bluff will probably work unless DeSantis has learned his lesson to not understand the manipulative power of Disney on local politics. If DeSantis blinks and caves to Disney, then he’ll have forfeited the high moral ground that he has established for himself. This high moral ground is the foundation for his candidacy for POTUS.
If DeSantis doesn’t blink, then he’ll win. CA is just the wrong place for nearly any business to expand. FL is a bazillion times better investment location.

Sounds like something they decided not to build for other reasons and thought they would pretend it was Desantis' fault so morons would think they were sticking it to him, when the reality is the exact opposite. Keep pumping out those ###### movies Disney and you'll be canceling even more projects you can blame on Desantis. They certainly know how stupid their supporters are. Have to grant them that.

Disney also announced they are shutting down their Star Wars hotel. Guess if they told you it was because of Desantis you'd believe that as well, as opposed to them destroying perhaps the most valuable intellectual property of all time. Great work you woke pieces of garbage.
