I get a lot of questions about Grisham and Dabo's plans for him. I have tried to wait until all of this with the OL and DE coaching search is over to start asking (which means today at 9:15, haha). I've been told there are no other coaching changes expected and that Swinney is excited about wide receiver recruiting and the pipeline.
Now could that change? Sure. Things happen, but right now, that is not the expectation.

So, what do you do if a guy brings in good/great talent but doesn’t develop it as a position coach? I’m sure that question has lingered around in Dabo’s mind. Maybe Dabo will name a new “assistant” WR coach to help Grisham.

Hope to see a vast improvement from that position next year. Especially with physicality and completing catches.

My guess is with the two line changes and Grisham's role as recruiting coordinator, Dabo decided to give him another year and not replace that role this recruiting cycle. If we struggle at WR next year with the influx of talent, a new/improved OL coach and another year under Riley, we replace Grisham then.

No surprise there given the large hole Jeff Scott left in recruiting classes.

13 new receiving options available next year that were not available in large part this year between injuries, redshirts, and new players at TE, WR and RB. 2nd year in a new offensive system and just about everybody returning.
Big jump next year on offense, much like the defense this year.

Misses by Austin on OL recruits cost him his job. Coaching ability was not the primary reason Austin was let go and Grisham retained.

Man, it's just unbelievable that Dabo of all people can't see the steady decline in development since J Scott left. It is AWFUL. Yes Gris pulled a couple nice recruits in this coming class but when was the last WR we had drafted? The only ones drafted were J Scott's guys and you aren't gonna tell me we just keepmissing on EVERY SINGLE WR outside of Brown & AW. I hope Dabo at least brings Scott back in a coaching role!

to draft eligible yet. I assume you are thing of guys like Ngata Ladson Collins Collins. All those guys signed and or committed prior to TG being named coached. I imagine even Stellato was not really a TG identified guy as he committed in the summer after TG got the job which probably means recruiting and offer had already been made prior to JS leaving. I think Stellato still has a chance to be great if he can stay out of the training room like this year. Williams and Brown are the real deal. I think a couple more out of this class that RS will be big contributors along with the incoming 2. I also think Cole and Adam can also be big players if they can get healed. Out of the 4 I mentioned at the top - Ngata was more of an injury situation vs talent. Those other 3 seem to have been overated/misses - the exact opposite of Williams/Brown + a couple others that look promising in the FR/SO class

Based on that logic, I’m supposed to assume that Jeff Scott just had an amazing hit rate on WR’s, and his last class was just full of duds. I think at some point we have to recognize that not only did Scott recruit well, but he could also develop those guys. Is it possible that his last class was full of duds because Grisham can’t develop the WR’s? To this point, the only receivers that have shown anything have been the slot guys (the position he played) and they seem to be better out of HS than when they’ve spent time under Grisham. Either way, it’s year 5 and nutt cuttin time for that WR room.

Is it possible Tyler Grisham just doesn’t know how to coach anything other than slot receivers effectively? He was one himself, and that seems to be the only WR spot we get production from. I know that may sound crazy, but the skills needed at boundary are far different than those as a slot, and it seems our boundary guys tend to play small rather than high pointing and fighting for balls. Who knows. Maybe I’m overanalyzing. Hopefully there’s a turnaround at that position, but we’re going into his 5th year, and most HC’s don’t get that long to start showing production.

I could not have imagined that they would have made a coaching change at two positions, and waited very long to make additional changes. I don’t necessarily think Grisham is the answer, but I do think the injuries at the WR position were a major challenge this year.
Moving forward, our wide receivers need to learn how to run precise routes much better, get separation, fight for the ball, and block like they would want others to block for them.

I think the fact that Tyler Grisham survives is testament to a couple of things.
Dec 5, 2023, 9:37 AM

1) Dabo sees how badly we need help at wideout.
2) The reality is, if Grisham was cut loose at this particular point in time, that help in the pipeline probably reopens their recruitment and bolts elsewhere.

Retaining Grisham makes sense. I've been critical of him and still believe he's on the hot seat. But he deserves one more year to prove himself.
Antonio is our best overall WR. Tyler showed what he can do in the slot. Cole was a starter until he got hurt. Randall needs to learn to cut it loose. Stellato proved that he can play as well. That is a pretty good 5 to start the year with.
Tink, Ronan, and Noble are all pretty much unknowns. Hopefully at least one of them can emerge as a factor next year. Wesco and Moore are legit. Both of them have the potential to be immediate impact players for us. I like this group of 5 as well.
Plus, Cade really struggled last year. He was laughably inconsistent at times. I think Cade will make a pretty significant jump in year 2 though. I am anticipating that the OL will be much improved under Matt Luke as well.
No excuses for Grisham next year. We bring back 5 WRs with tons of experience, 2 of which could be All-ACC type of players. The next 5 are all really talented, so we should get something out of at least 2 of them. Their QB and OL will be better. 2nd year in the Riley system.
