last night. You could say they were undone by what should have just been instinctive rote by this point in a season. What is that? The center to QB snap in the shotgun formation. Failure to accomplish it sunk Bama at a crucial, crucial time in the game.
In other games in college and the NFL, the simplest of things became HUGE mistakes. Lining up offsides for a receiver. Failing (per the OFFICIALS) to check in as eligible on a trick play that would have worked.
In OUR case, failure of the QB to RB exchange, resulting in lost fumbles and lost games. Against USuK, THEIR failure to recognize their own backwards pass resulted in the pivotal turnover and points for us in the game.
Regardless of whatever else we work on this offseason, a return to, and constant practicing of, the most BASIC fundamentals of blocking, tackling, handoffs, snaps, even lining up correctly, all of this cannot and should not be taken for granted. If it is, it will come back to bite us in the buttocks, at the worst possible time, just like it did Alabama last night.
