Call me craz-e, but I think Dabo may have hurt Clemson

recruiting overall with his blind devotion to DJ. If I'm a recruit, and see him sticking with DJ as badly as he was playing, I'm thinking, "Why would I go there and try and compete, he is going to stick with his starters no matter what, and I will be riding pine if I am not one of those, with no chance to see the field."

I don't think we will ever know the truth of that whole situation, other than that there HAD to be some vast unknown factors behind the scenes. You could say Cade wasn't ready and all that hubris, but he could NOT have stunk it up any worse than Big Stinko did for his last few games. Big Dave must have had some pictures of Dabo in a compromising position with barnyard poultry, or something like that. Otherwise, it just makes no CENTS!

It was just his opinion coot, you would be better off learning to respect the elder fans of Clemson that has been around longer, and seen way more Clemson FB than you have I would assume. Most of your comments here at T-Net really makes it hard to believe that you're not a coot!!!!

When a longtime fan like 76er® makes a comment that you may not agree to, it's just as easy to say nothing than it is to be disrespectful, but with most things you've said on T-Net, Im going to assume that you really don't know any better bc being disrespectful seems to be a thing for you....

A poster defends the Clemson coach, defends the quality of Clemson recruits, and that somehow disrespectful and evidence the poster is a South Carolina fan?

so I don't know why the panties are all in a wad over that comment. If I had written my disagreement, I would have answered him by starting with 'craz-e' as the beginning of the response.

I am usually very respectful of the elder statesman on this board but I lose a bit of respect for any poaster who sinks as low as to calling players names like was done here. Doesn’t matter who it is or how long he has been doing it. Respect is a 2 way street.

You maybe onto something there, but I believe that replacing coaches from within has hurt our team as much or more than anything he's done in the past several years.

We always had a receiver going in the 1st round when Jeff Scott was the receivers position coach, and we would have a D player going in the 1st half of the 1st round when BV was DC, and Murphy and Breese were two of our highest rated D recruits coming in as any that we have recruited. IMO the within promotions has hurt our team as much or more than anything Dabo has done since becoming the FB HC, and I believe that a lot more thought should be put into who he gets for replacing coaches that were good enough to get a better position at other schools....

The recruits were so talented we could afford to throw in a guy working at Best Buy. Trying to do even more of that when those coaches were gone was like trying to tie yarn to a military tank to keep it from falling apart because our good studs ...bolts and special powerful welding tools were not up to specs.

Dabo has done enough to earn our trust

Whatever happened, he did it to help Clemson in the long run!

He’s been all in for a long long time, he’s all about making Clemson great in the long run!

He’s not perfect but still the best college coach period. No other coach could have done what he’s done at Clemson!

Proof is in the pudding!

You're right in most cases, but it do seem that since covid, and coaches leaving to improve their status in the college FB world, it seems that Dabo has shopped for the pudding that's on Sale....

In 2021 we didn't have much behind DJ to offer in the QB area. Taison's achilles tear in the spring would normally be a total season killer, and he obviously wasn't physically ready early on when we opened 4-3. Once we were out of any national picture, Ship came off injured reserve and helped lead us to a 6-0 finish, with DJ being the serviceable version in the role.

2022 offered us a raw CK, with DJ clearly earning the honors to start Game 1. What followed was a 7-0 start, Heisman talk, Manning Award watch list, and stats mirroring DW4 and TL16 - look it up.

Cade had opportunities early season to show more, and his numbers and performances just didn't cut the mustard compared to what DJ was doing. La Tech was a great example. Cade came in in the 3rd quarter, led us nowhere, Tech scores two TD's to make it a game, DJ comes back in and seals the deal.

Game 8 vs Syracuse, Dabo makes a switch when DJ was struggling with enough game left to make a difference, and Cade delivered enough. Were the weird relationship an issue, would Dabo make that change like he did?

After the Open Date following, DJ is clearly going to start at ND considering his success there in 2020 plus the extra time off. His stats weren't horrible, but we couldn't put scoring drives together. Cade gets an opportunity early enough, and goes Freshman with the pick deep in our territory. Game over.

Afterwards, DJ was back to 7-0 form leading us to division-clinching wins and still in the CFP hunt.

There's just no 'there' there on all this over devotion, tunnelvision, hubris stuff. The stats, wins, circumstances, and options behind him all pointed to keeping him in the game as Dabo did. Our recruiting remains Top 10, which is Dabo's norm throughout our emergence into the upper stratosphere.

If anything, DJ's time here is similar to Brownell somehow making it to Year 14. He struggles when the expectations are high, and delivers well when the spotlight is off - enough apparently to keep sticking with. Just when you think it's over - voila'! Success and light at the end of the tunnel, only to round back into the norm when belief hits a high point.

I don't think so. We have some high-profile players in the NFL who will influence recruits more than what happened with DJ. It's all about the NFL when it comes to recruits these days.

The only thing I can say is it does not appear that everyone had equal opportunity to beat him out. No way he was best Q.B. in our locker room for one single game last season.

Re: Call me craz-e, but I think Dabo may have hurt Clemson

Well I’m not sure if it is directly related to DJ but had a guy tell one day when we were discussing DJ still starting, and he said that Dabo is loyal and that the players love that about him.

I can somewhat see it both ways but in the end I would think you play the best unless he is not practicing or working hard off the field. In this scenario I was looking more to Klubnik getting some valuable reps on DJ’s bad days.

DJ was a square peg in a round hole. Strictly a result of POOR offensive philosophy and 2nd level coaching. Bottom line is head coach is responsible and that's why Dabo KNEW he had to make the change. Most of you may not know that when Red Parker was fired, it was because the AD at the time insisted that certain changes had to be made on the coaching staff and Parker refused(loyalty to his coaches). Without going public, Dabo did what he HAD to do without being told to. Good for him.
