Dabo and the portal

Been reading posts about the portal, articles about the guys in the portal, and everybody complaining about Dabo not using the portal.

Seems pretty unanimous that everyone says there are two types of guys in the portal - those looking for more NIL money, and those looking for more playing opportunity.

Just my 2 cents, but I don't see Dabo EVER getting anyone who is in the portal just for the money - kids who got plenty of playing time, played at a good program, for a good team, and got plenty of reps, but who still transferred, with most of us believing it's for more NIL money/opportunity. Not gonna happen. He wants people who want to play for CLEMSON, not who want to play for money. Doesn't matter how well the guy may fit a real or perceived need, he's not going to go there. It's antithetical to everything he believes.

Any portal moves he makes will likely be guys who fit the latter bill - looking for opportunity and who left due to coaching changes or lack of reps or whatever.

Dabo is all about culture. Not just winning games, no matter the cost. He will only go after guys who want to be at CLEMSON, who want to contribute to the culture, and who want to be party of the TEAM.

I'm totally cool with that.

I don't agree a kid can be looking for both better opportunities and NIL

That OL from Shorter for example was looking for an opportunity at a larger school, but why would he pass up an opportunity to also receive compensation? I believe Clemson provides the best opportunity to develop a kid into a better player and person, but that doesn't mean everywhere else stinks at it. If a player can go somewhere else that he perceives to be on par with Clemson and also get paid why not do it? If I have two job offers, one is in a place I love and one is in a place I really really like, if the pay is substantial different I might have a tough choice.

So what happens to the current O-linemen when you pay a portal kid more than what they are getting paid?

Totally agree.

I think that one thing we lose sight of is that while we all want more championships, Dabo is in it to develop young men and prepare them for the future. He knows that only a handful of players he coaches will be big name NFL stars. Most players he coaches won't make it to the NFL at all. So he not only wants to teach them to be better players, but to be better men. I'm on board with that.

Let me preface my comment with the statement that I detest the current college football unfettered pay-for-play structure. With that being said, I guess we'll see how "on board" everyone is with the previously stated portal parameters that Dabo incorporates into managing his program when we start to go 8-4 each year and no conference championships. When you don't win at a high level and are making high level money, patience begins to wear thin.

So if Dabo said, “y’all can reduce my pay back down to $500k a year, but i still won’t aggressively use the portal…”

You’d be ok with that? He wouldn’t be making big time money anymore (at least not in HC terms).

Back to $500K?

His first contract as our head coach was for a base of $800K a year, with incentives of course for good performance.

than Dabo was in his first year. One catapulted that starter salary into one of the most successful decades in college sports history and still has the program primed to win championships, and the other, well, largely languished in mediocrity over that span and has just now fielded a team, in his 14th season, that has a legitimate shot for post-season glory.

I guess it doesn’t take long for your patience to run thin. One 8 win season after 12 consecutive 10 or more?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

8-4 had NOTHING to do with the portal.

The problem is people want to win and be part of an elite program. They also want NIL money to some extent. Clemson will struggle to remain competitive in the current environment. The ACC TV contract is less than SEC & Big 10's, so money has to come in to fill the gap. Our current players are being recruited by others, hence Dabo's meetings with players. It's pay to play with few rules now.

That's fine.

But ever year we don't use the portal and our top talent leaves, the weaker we get compared to teams who use if effectively.

None of our losses the last few seasons had anything to do with the portal, unless we’re talking about finding and bringing in a great/elite QB, which we aren’t.

Just need Cade to step forward, and to not let catastrophic turnovers lose games.

You must be totally cool with slipping from winning 12- 13 games a year to only winning 8.

Nearly 100% on not having a great/elite QB
