D-Day

Offering a sharp Clemson Military Salute to ALL who stormed the many beaches that day in France..and especially the brave Souls who lost their life.
I toured the Normandy Beach site & Museum back in early 1992 and when I saw the actual film of it that was taken by the Nazi’s (later captured) and then later when I looked from a high sandy hill down to the beach below (from the advantage sight I got from a remaining German metal pill box for machine-gunners)..
I got David Hood’s Confetti (tears) streaming down my cheeks..
and then I looked over at all those many many white grave markers for dead American Soldiers.. i realized that probably only a few had had a relative to visit them..and more sad was that most would never return to their native soil & home.
One bright spot is that the French Peoole (especially the older ones & certain groups that lay wreathes, keep the sites immaculate, etc) still honor our Fallen.
R.I.P. Soldiers of D-Day!

and I also will be making the trek to Normandy soon.
I've seen some of the cemetery's in France and you're right, they are immaculate. And you're right on another subject, the confetti.
Go Tigers AND Tiger Nation!

I’m planning a trip to France to take

one the larger WWII tours from the Normandy beaches all the way to Berchtesgaden Germany and the Eagles Nest. I also plan to go to Pearl Harbor in a separate trip.
My Dad was on an aircraft carrier in WW II. He fought in the battles at Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and the liberation of the Philippines.
That generation truly was the greatest generation.

You are 100% correct in your assessment of that generation. There will never be a more loyal and courageous generation than that one.

So many young men lost their lives that day, many even before setting foot on the beach/ground, much less firing a shot. Whether the infantry coming in on the beach or the airborne behind the lines - it was, as has been said, a day of days. And a day that, without which, the world would be vastly different.
I'm re-reading The Bedford Boys right now and it does a great job of illustrating the humanity that was lost that day. Not just soldiers - sons, husbands, boyfriends, fathers. And while we "romanticize" it that they wanted to serve their country, so many of that era were happy to have the extra income that the National Guard provided before they were folded in to the regular army.
They were willing to put their lives on the line, but I guarantee you that none but a very few actually "gave up" their lives. They fought hard for it and for the lives of their buddies. They wanted to go home and see their families again and live their lives.
Sadly, very few people anymore know the significance of today. I'm so very thankful for all of those who have served and put their lives on the line for freedom, and today was one of the most important days in world history to illustrate that.

Yes, because they experienced first hand what it was like to live under an occupying force (Nazis i.e. Statist) or where told by their parents. Unfortunately, the younger French are learning this lesson first hand as they now live under an occupying force (Jihadist i.e. Statist).

It would be nice if we could get through the silent salute at the Purple Out game without some tailgater cranking up Bon Jovi.

We went to Normandy last year. It’s amazing that our guys were able to make it up the beaches with the Germans shooting down on them. Even more amazing was the US Rangers scaling the cliffs at Pond du Hoc. The American cemetery is stunning and will bring tears to your eyes. Check out the WWII museum in Caen, which is close by if you go. I found the French people very appreciative. Also check out the National D-Day museum in New Orleans if you get to Louisiana.
