Loungers GITT with your ongoing home project
Dec 5, 2018, 11:10 AM
|

What are yall working on currently?
I have to fix the water line in the freezer door for the fridge. Pretty sure I'm just going to end up getting a new fridge and put this one in the garage as a beer fridge. Got a couple of other little projects but that's about it.

Just finished built in shelves in the foyer closet. Increased storage 3 fold. I was going to add recessed lights to all of the bedrooms and wire a separate switch for it so I don't have to go through the UDP Bullshid of pulling the ceiling fan string to turn the light on/fan off every time but I gave up on that project since we are probably moving in <1 year. Next project will be to re landscape my rockscape (thanks jounge) and patch the hole above my electrical panel from all of the wiring work i've done over the past several years.

flood lights on the corners of the house. Going to rewire instead of running the existing wires.
Drop the wire down to the switch that controls the lights on the front porch.

The proper way to do this is buy some UF wire and just staple it along the soffit on the outside of your house to the switch. No need to run through the wall/attic.

the entire inside of the house. Next is building a fence, think I'm going with wooden posts and black chain link. Got two massive stumps to pull up, and I'll probably till the entire yard and re-seed this spring.
Over Cripmas I plan to put new boards down on the deck, and re screen the porch.

Buy 12' 4x4s
cut them into 3 4' sections. Put them 1' in the ground. and there you have a nice 3' tall fence
Just ask Fence builder

I loved it at my old house, even though it did grow fast AF. The Princess 77 is supposed to be a little more shade resistant, so we'll see. I don't think the zoysia would hold up to the dog traffic with how slow it grows. And ain't no way I can afford to sod right now.

you MAY want to consult w/ a structural engineer
Dec 5, 2018, 2:41 PM
|
|
should be quick & easy for them (aka, relatively cheap?)
You've got different live loads to take into account, going from attic (10-20psf) to playroom (30-40psf), and therefore span req's
You've got existing 2x8's @ 16" oc (for a bedroom live load of 30psf, that's a span of ~10' to ~15', depending on lumber grade).
Sistering one more 2x8's (assuming a good nail/bolt pattern) basically gets you (less than) a nominal 4x8 (you'd have a 3" x 7.25" joist), also @ 16" oc.
Now, high grade 2x8s will get you a 15ft to 16'-6" span, for 40 & 30 psf liveloads respectively if spaced @ 12" oc...
TLDR, consult an structural engineer. Might even be able to ask a guy at the lumber yard

One of the builder-installed wire racks in the wife's walkin
Dec 5, 2018, 12:39 PM

closet downstairs collapsed under the sheer weight of 184 outfits that she never wears. And since she's always complained about those stupid wire racks (and she's right, they're uberstupid), this seems like an opportune time to rip everything in that closet out and start over.
Of course, this is dependent on her getting the rest of her shit out of the closet, so I'm guesstimating a Feb. 2019 start date.

Just need to rent a trencher, maybe 150 feet of QUALITY PVC, some glue, saw, and more free time than I'll have in a year. Oh Lort yes
Dec 5, 2018, 2:44 PM
|
|
1. Finishing my multi-year mud-room renovation. Mudroom is about 12x20, converted car-port. I am nearly finished with a 20' wall-0-shelving with sliding doors. I'm doing the drywall now. Recessed lighting is complete. I may pour some concrete to level up the floor some, since it was a carport and is sloped AF. Two of the walls and ceiling are old hart pine with distressed paint from an old abandoned house on the property.
2. I ordered a new Kraftmaid vanity today for the hall bath. I'm going to gut that room and totally rearrange and re-do it. New tile and electrical, all plumbing is being relocated, closet is going away, new tile going down, new shower stall with tile going up. The toilet gets a new seat. That's the big one.
3. I ordered plantation shutters to cover all of the bedroom windows and other front-facing windows. They should be here in early January. That'll cut down on those pesky school kids who area always interrupting my mid-day wank sessions.
4. I currently have 32 4x6x12' treated timbers, four 16"x 16' I beams, and a ton of other steel in my yard. I'm working on pre-fabbing a bridge for our hunting land. I'm cutting gussets now and pre-drilling all holes. I'm also pouring concrete footings that we can set with the excavator. The more work I can do at the house will make it easier to do down in the Edisto swamps.
